Behind the Reviews
Behind the Reviews is a weekly series that will explore my reviews content and the reasons behind my reviews content choices. The first run of the series will focus on each TV show and web series I’ve reviewed, with each edition being released in Alphabetical order, and will run from 1 August 2022 until 24 April 2023. After this first run, the series will continue to complement reviews content as it’s published.

The thirty-fifth edition of Behind the Reviews focuses on two Book – Analysis pieces I’ve written focusing on two book series that I had and loved as a child, the Clue series and the Mr. Men and Little Miss complete collections.

The thirty-third edition of Behind the Reviews focuses on the TV Show – Analysis pieces I’ve written, which provide an in-depth look at themes or topics that have been explored either on a general level or in a specific episode and/or season of a TV show.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #32 (Web Series)
The thirty-second edition of Behind the Reviews focuses on the three web series I’ve reviewed: Lucy and DiC, Scrubs: Interns, and The Good Place Presents: The Selection.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #31 (Upload)
The thirty-first edition of Behind the Reviews focuses on U.S. series, Upload. This edition focuses on the fact that Upload is the first show I’ve reviewed that was made for a streaming service as opposed to free-to-air television, and how the show focuses on futuristic aspects both in the living and afterlife worlds.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #30 (The Wrong Girl)
The thirtieth edition of Behind the Reviews explores The Wrong Girl, which is based on the novel of the same name. This edition outlines the show’s focus on Lily and her complicated friendships and relationships, as well as how the show was unofficially cancelled, in part, due to the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against one of its stars, Craig McLachlan.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #29 (The Time Traveler’s Wife)
The twenty-ninth edition of Behind the Reviews explores U.S. series, The Time Traveler’s Wife, which is based on the novel of the same name. This edition focuses on how and why a TV show was the best way to adapt the novel, as opposed to the 2009 movie, and how successful famed Doctor Who writer, Steven Moffatt, was in adapting novel, despite the show ultimately being cancelled after a short, one season run.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #28 (The Secret Daughter)
The twenty-eighth edition of Behind the Reviews explores Australian series, The Secret Daughter, which starred singer, Jessica Mauboy, as “Billie Carter, a part-time country pub singer, whose life changes forever after a chance meeting with wealthy city hotelier, Jack Norton.” This edition focuses on how Mauboy was the first Indigenous lead actor in a scripted drama, and how the show focused on the mystery of whether Billie actually is Jack’s daughter, as well as Billie bonding with her half-siblings, and building her singing career in the city.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #27 (The Newsreader)
The twenty-seventh edition of Behind the Reviews explores Australian series, The Newsreader. This edition focuses on how the show brought the big news stories of 1986, like the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, the return of Halley’s Comet, Lindy Chamberlain’s release from prison, and the Chernobyl Disaster to life, alongside the personal stories of the newsrooms’ journalists who were struggling with sexism, drug addiction, sexuality, maintaining career longevity, and the HIV/AIDs epidemic.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #26 (The Good Place)
The twenty-sixth edition of Behind the Reviews explores US series, The Good Place. This edition focuses on how the show pulled off a premise changing twist in its first season finale, how the succeeding seasons pulled off a long-term story arc, and how it lead to a web series spin-off.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #25 (Street Smart)
The twenty-fifth edition of Behind the Reviews explores Australian series, Street Smart, the brainchild of Here Come the Habibs co-creators, Rob Shehadie and Tahir Bilgic. This edition focuses on how the show shared some similarities with Here Come the Habibs and how its premise of a “hilarious and entertaining look at a team of bumbling crims” was executed.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #24 (Squinters)
The twenty-fourth edition of Behind the Reviews explores the ABC comedy, Squinters, which is about “five car loads of travellers, on the road, to and from work, wrestling with the conundrums of daily life.” This edition focuses on how the show was unique in its premise and setting, as well as with its choice to invert the classic writing rule of “show, don’t tell”.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #23 (Speechless)
The twenty-third edition of Behind the Reviews explores US series, Speechless, which revolves around the DiMeo family and their lives, specifically focusing on the experiences of oldest son, JJ, who has cerebral palsy, attending a new, inclusive school. This edition focuses on how the show tackled various topics revolving around disability and inclusivity.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #22 (Sisters & Almost Family)
The twenty-second edition of Behind the Reviews explores two television shows, Australian series, Sisters, and its American remake, Almost Family. This edition analyses how the remake differed from its Australian original, but also how it was able to explore character and story arcs that the original didn’t have the chance to do.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #21 (Seachange [Reboot])
The twenty-first edition of Behind the Reviews explores the fourth season of Australian TV series, Seachange (although it was marketed as a ‘reboot’). This edition analyses the differences between the fourth season and the first three seasons of the show, and how it managed (and sometimes didn’t manage) to continue a premise that was established over 20 years ago.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #20 (Sando)
The twentieth edition of Behind the Reviews explores Australian TV series, Sando, which focuses on titular character, Victoria ‘Sando’ Sandringham who “needs to reconnect with her family to revive her business and find personal redemption”. This edition analyses why I was scathing in my reviews of the first-half of the season and how the show eventually improved.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #19 (RFDS)
The nineteenth edition of Behind the Reviews explores Australian TV series, RFDS, which revolves around the lives of the workers for the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS).
This edition analyses how the show is not only based on the real-life Royal Flying Doctors Service, but how the Service’s involvement in the production of the show to ensure accuracy affected the show’s quality and credibility.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #18 (Playing for Keeps)
The eighteenth edition of Behind the Reviews explores Australian TV series, Playing for Keeps, which focuses on the wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of the players of fictional AFL club, the Southern Jets. This edition also looks at the two spin-off web series of the show, and how the show ended on a low note.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #17 (My Life Is Murder)
The seventeenth edition of Behind the Reviews explores the Australian/New Zealand TV series, My Life Is Murder, and how the show managed to maintain its quality even after having to make major cast and location changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #16 (Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries)
The sixteenth edition of Behind the Reviews explains why I chose to review Seven Network crime drama, Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, a spinoff of the ABC crime drama, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.
