John Marsden Writing Topic #471
Describe a time when you conquered a fear**
I conquered a fear today when I participated in the Australia Day Aquathon. The Aquathon consists of a swim in Wollongong Harbour and a nearby run. The distances for both the swim and the run vary on personal preference. Since it was my first time at it, I completed the ‘Try Aqua’ distance, which was a 200m swim and a 2km run (or rather walk for me).
The fear that I conquered today was swimming in the ocean for the first time in six years. This fear developed after the loss of a dear friend of mine, George Matchett, in 2011. George’s death was caused by drowning. He drowned as he was surfing with friends and got caught in a rip. Ever since his death, I had been afraid of swimming in the ocean.
