John Marsden Writing Topic #500
Do something you’ve never done before and write about it**
This ANZAC Day, I went to an ANZAC Day service for the very first time. There’s a part of me that is ashamed of this and I honestly don’t know why I haven’t been to any services before. I have been to the occasional parade throughout my childhood, not to mention my schools had their own tributes, but never a full service. Not to mention I have always upheld the greatest respect for soldiers–past, present and future.
I went to this years’ service at Wollongong Town Hall, which was almost at capacity and was incredible. I appreciated the prayers of remembrance by both the Catholic and Anglican bishops and the hymns, but what really got to me was paying tribute to our ANZACs with the community, not to mention the Last Post. The Last Post always makes me cry, I can’t imagine what these men, as well as boys, would have gone through.
I’m definitely going to a Dawn Service next year.
