‘Everyman for himself and God against all.’ (Werner Herzog) Is this the way it is?**
My interpretation of this quote, based on the plot summary of Herzog’s film and information on various legends of Kaspar Hauser, is that everyone is out for themselves (this would include Hauser as there were several claims that he was a pathological liar) and has their own unscrupulous motives and God or a higher power, is against all of these people who are out for themselves and have unscrupulous motives.
