‘Friendship first, competition second.’ This is, or was the Chinese approach to sport. Do you think it is a valid approach?**

I think yes and no. I think competition is important during a game or match as that is the way that the game or match is played and should be played.

However once the players step off the field or court, the competition should stay there. That being said sportsmanship is very important and should be practiced. One good example of Australian sportsmanship that I have come across whilst growing up was during an AFL match between Essendon and Brisbane in 2006. Brisbane player, Jamie Charman was seriously injured and Essendon player and then-captain, David Hille stood by Charman and comforted him until medical assistance arrived.

Off the field or court, friendship should come first. Sports provide an opportunity for people to meet new people and make friends.
