John Marsden Writing Topic #436

‘I hate being thirteen,’ she said. ‘See? I’m weird,’ he murmured. ‘I love it’ (Tim Winton, Lockie Leonard, Human Torpedo) What do you think of the age you are now? What’s been your favourite age?**

The age I am now is 25.

I think 25 is an in-between age. What I mean by in-between age is that 25 is between 20 and 30. Twenty is an age where people are starting to move out and experience independence, rebellion and choice for the first time. Thirty is an age where people are starting to settle down and have children. Twenty-five is an age where you are between two polar opposite chapters of life and you don’t know where you are heading. I certainly don’t know where I’m heading at this age in my life.

So far my favourite ages have been 18 and 22/23. The reason why 18 was a favourite age was because I became an adult (legally) and was able to go to pubs and bars without my parents, was able to vote, drink and it was also the age when I finished school. The reason why 22/23 was another favourite age, more of a favourite than 18 was due to the fact that my writing career took off, I was doing well at uni, I was independent of my parents (still am) and I had my first serious relationship, which was mostly a happy one.

It will be interesting to look back on this in another five or ten years and see if, within those years, I have another favourite age.
