The brief of the AWC Furious Fiction – June 2026 short story competition was as follows:

• Each story had to take place on a BRIDGE.
• A character in the story had to have too much/many of something.
• Each story had to include the words CATCH, MEASURE, WARM (longer variations were allowed)

Let it Rain

If I get rid of it all, nothing bad will happen, they can’t catch me.

My bosses were warm in the beginning – welcoming, made me feel like part of a real family, told me that my work, their work, would do great things for the community. But that wasn’t true. They were working hard to embezzle the money and keep it for themselves. They’d clearly been doing this for years, embezzling an amount beyond any measure I could make in my limited time with them.

I had to stop them and the only way I knew how was to get rid of it all.

I withdrew all the money they embezzled in cash as soon as the bank opened, as an authorised person I could do it without question. I put the cash in duffle bags, like they do in the movies.

I thought the bridge was the best way to give the money back to the people – it’s in the middle of the park, it’s tall, and the wind would help it get to everyone.

As soon as I opened and flipped the duffle bag over, I knew I made the right decision. Seeing the shocked but happy looks on everyone’s faces as they put their hands up to catch the flying notes brought me more joy and relief than I felt since I was hired.

The police were standing behind me, waiting for me, when I was done and turned around to leave. They told me to put my hands behind my back and put the handcuffs on me.

Surely they wouldn’t convict me since I gave the money back to everyone?

Surely?
