John Marsden Writing Topic #213

Write a piece set in the future, incorporating one major change from today’s world (show us the change: don’t tell us what it is).**

#This story is the sequel to my 2016 novelette, How We Got Here. How We Got Here is the story of Lorraine and her ten children (who are now adults). Lorraine is about to marry her long-time partner, Travis, and as a wedding gift, her children have written letters to her, expressing their joy for her impending marriage, and detailing their relationship with both of them. How We Got Here is set in late 2008, Where We Are Now brings us to the present day, with Lorraine and her children (most of them with their own families), dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. While the COVID-19 pandemic is current, as I started this challenge in 2015 and the original story is set in 2008, I felt that this prologue was fitting for this writing topic.

Subject: Checking In

Hi Dears,

Well it’s happened, they’ve shut the borders and now there’s social distancing. The boss called me, well all of us, into work tomorrow for an emergency meeting to figure out how we’re going to operate with social distancing requirements. Travis is going into work tomorrow to do the same thing with his team. He sends his love to you all.

I thought email would be the easiest way to check in with you all. Except for Michael, Cassie and Julie, you’re all so far away from me and I’m worried about all of you. Well I’m always worried and I know, I know, you can take care of yourselves and your families, but this is different.

I’ll be checking in with you all more often. It will probably annoy you all, but I’m your mother, please humour me. However the phone works both ways, if any of you want or need to talk to me at any time, don’t hesitate.

Gwen, Christi, Carrie and Elaine – with the borders shut, I don’t know when I’ll see you next. Gwen and Christi, please give my grandbabies hugs for me.

Please use hand sanitiser, wash your hands, and stay safe.

Love you all.

Mum xxoo
