Furious Fiction – March 2021
The brief of the AWC Furious Fiction—March 2021 short story competition was as follows:
- Each story had to include the pictured setting (above) at some point.
- Each story had to include the following “MAR-” words: MARKET, MARBLE, MARVELLOUS, MARSHMALLOW.
- Each story’s final sentence had to contain dialogue – i.e. someone speaking.
I managed to hobble my way into the phone box on the bank, of all the times to hurt my ankle, why did it have to be on my first day of holidays?
“Hi Dr. Marsh…sorry Tim…it’s Teresa. I’m sorry to call you on your personal line on a Sunday, I’m calling as I’ve actually injured myself this time. There were kids by the lake playing with marbles and I ended up tripping over them…the marbles, not the kids! And I think I’ve twisted or sprained my ankle.
“You should actually come and visit Haywood’s Cliff, it’s marvellous! The lake is beautiful and the camp site is divine. I even toasted marshmallows by a fire last night! Anyway I was wondering if it was possible for you to come and see me? There’s a market across the road from the lake’s bank with car parks, I can hobble my way over there and wait?”
“Hi Teresa, this is Jake at Minnamurra Butchery, there’s no Tim or Dr. Marsh here, I think he gave you the wrong number. But Haywood’s Cliff does sound marvellous.”
