Furious Fiction – June 2019
The brief of the AWC Furious Fiction—June 2019 short story competition was as follows:
- Your story must take place at a PARTY of some kind.
- Your story must include a BUTTON.
- Your story must include the following sentence (which you will complete with one or more words): THE AIR WAS THICK WITH….
One Person and a Crowd
The air was thick with laughter, spilled alcohol and small talk.
My friend, Amy, invited me to her friend, Charlotte’s, “F” themed party. I decided to go with floral attire. Other than Amy, I didn’t know anyone else, so I’m now one person in a crowd, holding onto my drink and wondering if I should start talking to people or let them find me.
After finishing my drink and still talking to no-one, I went to the bathroom to have a moment to myself. I wanted to leave, but felt bad as I was invited. As I went to wash my hands, I saw it, a green button on the right side. It didn’t look like it was connected to the taps, faucet or any of the pipes. It didn’t move, it was firmly connected, but to what?
Usually when you see a big button it’s red, I’m wondering why it’s green.
I’m not really having any fun, Amy’s busy and I was thinking of leaving, I might as well push the button and see what happens.
A bright light surrounded me and the next thing I knew I was in a rainforest, by a waterfall, all by myself, with no return button.
Maybe I should have gone home, but I guess this is it now, that or I’ve had too much to drink.
