Aftertaste – Season 2, Episode 2

Now that the premiere has come and gone, the fun can really begin with story arcs and subplots.

This episode has Brett and Denise taking a dance class as it was one of their wedding gifts, and Diana struggling to come up with a menu for a famous chef at the London restaurant she works at, as she and Easton fulfill their community service obligations.

When Diana picks Easton up from Margot’s vineyard, he sees the rough sketches she’s done of her proposed menu and points out it’s nothing like the food she creates. Meanwhile, Harry is on the phone to Viggo, the restaurant’s head chef, trying to reassure him that she will deliver, with Viggo not wanting her to create her signature dishes.

Diana tries to create her new menu whilst doing her community service at the soup kitchen, which leads to her falling behind in preparing the soup. One of the regular attendees at the soup kitchen, Terry, helps them out. Meanwhile, Harry finds a photo of Diana, Nayani and Kwame on the fridge, with the words “my loves” on the back of it, and goes to see Ben Zhao at his restaurant. Harry reveals Diana and Easton’s community service obligations to Ben, which leads to him going to the soup kitchen and aggravating Easton. Meanwhile, Kwame cooks for Harry and he loves it, asking Kwame why Diana never spoke about him. Kwame tells him to ask her.

Meanwhile in the dance class, as Alberto, the dance teacher, is helping Denise, she tells him that they’re at the class because of a voucher they received as a wedding gift, and admits to having the wedding to lure Diana back home. This leads to her loosening up and relaxing, which Brett encourages.

Back at the soup kitchen, Easton and Terry cook up the soup for the homeless attendees, improving it, while Diana makes a mini, Nordic apple crumble, which fails to impress them. Easton tastes it, not liking it, and calls her out for not trusting her intuition. When Diana returns home, Harry asks her why she didn’t tell him that she dated Kwame. Before she can answer, Denise comes home and tells her that she’s proud of her for going to London and apologises for ‘everything’, Diana in turn apologises to her. Meanwhile, Easton goes to Margot and tells her that he’s going on a sex strike until she invites him into her bedroom.

The episode ends with June showing up at the house, to Denise’s shock, looking for Easton.

Overall, I enjoyed the character development with Easton by standing up to Margot and teaching Terry in the soup kitchen. I also appreciated some overdue character development with Denise loosening up in the dance class and admitting to being proud of Diana. I also appreciated Ben’s reappearance and stirring Easton up. I’m happy to see June appear as I hoped for it last season when it was revealed that it wasn’t known if she was truly dead, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the writers go from here.

Stray Observations:

Running gags – Easton “jogging”, and Harry screaming in the distance as Denise, Diana, and Brett use the kitchen sink tap whilst he’s having a shower.

-Brett’s aunt, Lyn, got Denise a personalised robe that was misspelt ‘Dennis’ and apologises for it in the card that goes with it.

-One of the wedding gifts Denise and Brett got was a light up fly swatter.

-I found Jeremiah to be pretty much Easton in dancer form.

-The religious pamphlet that Easton is reading at the soup kitchen is titled, ‘Jesus experienced homelessness’.

-Nayani now works at Ben’s restaurant.

-Ben apprenticed for Harry’s father in London.
