Amazing Grace – Season 1, Episode 7

Like with my review of the previous episode, I’m going to review the penultimate episode of the season, character by character.

Grace, Diane, Sophia and Kirk – This episode focused on celebrating Sophia’s 18th birthday, or at least their efforts to celebrate it. Sophia is clearly miserable throughout the whole episode, including through her disastrous birthday dinner. At this dinner, when Grace gives Sophia a locket just like her own father gave her a locket for her own 18th birthday, it’s revealed that Sophia’s biological father, Rohan, left Grace without saying a word, and Grace’s father left her and Diane for another woman.

Sophia leaves the birthday dinner with her friend, Div, and they go out clubbing. They get drunk and Sophia ends up crashing at Diane’s, which Diane informs Grace and Kirk about after they have their first kiss. Kirk then leaves to go back to his motel.

The next morning, Sophia wakes up and Diane makes breakfast for her. Sophia asks Diane about her biological father as Grace won’t talk about him. Diane tells her that Grace will tell her about her biological father when she is ready. Sophia also reveals that her misery is coming from missing her adoptive mother.

When Grace and Diane arrive at work together, Diane tells Grace about Sophia wanting to know more about her biological father and missing her adoptive mother, and reveals to Grace that she spoke with Rohan, asking him to back off and give Grace space, but she didn’t actually think he’d leave her. Grace angrily storms off and goes to pick up Sophia, only for Sophia to inform her that she regrets finding Grace and is going to stay with Diane until the adoption has been finalised.

Laney, Paul and Christina – Laney is taken by surprise when Christina comes to see her and asks her to be her midwife as she trusts her, however Paul is not happy. Paul comes to see her and they argue about Christina’s request. Laney tells him that the birth will be too intense for him to notice that she is there. It is during this argument that Paul finds out that Laney’s client, Martha, is staying the night at the Centre for a rest from her overwhelming family commitments, and as Executive Director of Operations, he tells Laney to send Martha home as she has no valid medical reason to stay at the Centre. However, Sasha comes up with the idea of having Martha spend the night in the staff overnight room. Laney also reminds Paul that he’s having a baby with Christina and she has moved on.

Later, Laney feels ill and vomits in the bathroom. Although it’s not confirmed, it is implied that Laney is pregnant, however as she hooked up with another man in an earlier episode, it’s not clear whether the baby is Paul’s or not.

Grace, Max and Laney – Despite their kiss in the previous episode, Grace and Max only really interacted in the first half of the episode, while they were attending the homebirth of a first-time mother with her large Greek family in attendance. Their kiss wasn’t addressed, however Grace did ask Max about his interaction with Laney and the possibility of being a sperm donor for her. Max later asks Laney if she did think he was offering, she says she didn’t, and despite an awkward exchange, they clear the air.

Sasha and Tiffany – Sasha and Tiffany only had brief appearances in this episode. After Paul tells Laney to send Martha home, Sasha asks Tiffany to lie about Martha’s condition so she can stay at the Centre overnight, but Tiffany refuses.

After Martha gives birth, Tiffany reveals to Sasha that she knew Martha stayed at the Centre overnight anyway and questions why Sasha broke the rules. Sasha tells Tiffany that while she may have seen it as breaking the rules, in Sasha’s eyes they were helping out an exhausted mother-to-be for one night. Tiffany then tells Sasha she’s banning herself from the Centre as she knows Sasha will asks her to break the rules again and she won’t be able to refuse because she’s in love with her. Sasha is surprised but seemingly happy with Tiffany’s declaration of love for her.

Overall, I felt that this episode fell a little flat. There wasn’t much focus or backstory on the Centre’s clients who gave birth to their babies, rather the focus was more on the main characters themselves and their lives. While previous episodes have had a balance of focus on both the clients and the main characters, I felt in this episode tipped the scales more towards the main characters.

While Grace pretended that her kiss with Max never happened, she ended up kissing Kirk, and I honestly feel that her connections with both men are inconsistent. I’m not sure if the writers are planning a love triangle situation in the finale or not. Meanwhile I feel that Diane’s reveal, combined with her closeness with Sophia, and Sophia living with her, will lead to a large conflict in next week’s finale.

In regards to Laney, it will be interesting to find out who the father of her baby is, and if it is Paul, how it will affect her interaction with him and Christina, when Christina gives birth. I’m hoping that her affair with Paul doesn’t continue as I feel that would be sending her character backwards. In regards to Sasha and Tiffany, I felt that Tiffany’s declaration of love for her would be more monumental if there was any screen time given to their relationship.

Stray Observations:

-Laney’s brother lives in Adelaide and her parents live in Canberra. She lives in Sydney on her own and regards Grace as her family.

-Div was not seen or mentioned again after they went to the nightclub, where did she go and why did no-one ask about her?

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “… A new and improved Sasha…who speaks in third person.” (Sasha to Tiffany about letting Martha stay the night in the Centre)
  • “I’ll see you tonight?” “Sasha says, you will.” (Tiffany-Sasha, with Sasha talking to Tiffany in the third person)
