ABC Open Stories—One Moment, This Year

THE MOMENT I BECAME A BUSINESSWOMAN

I am a writer and a journalism student. I have been writing my whole life and although I did consider many other career paths like most children do (fish-and-chip shop owner, flight attendant, travel agent to name a few) but eventually I realised that writing and journalism are where my talent and passion lie. After taking a year off after finishing school, I started studying writing and journalism at the University of Wollongong in 2010.

I didn’t just consider other career paths because of childhood enthusiasm and naivety, I consider other career paths because I knew that writing and journalism didn’t have the biggest employment prospects. I didn’t care about making a heap of money and I still don’t but I wasn’t sure if any money I made would be enough to live on. The truth is I still don’t know, but due to pretty much everything being online, more opportunities are opening up for writers and journalists, however making enough money is still an issue.

This year I officially became a businesswoman. I established a freelance writing business in May in which I now work for five businesses. The moment I became a businesswoman was the moment after receiving my Australian Business Number (ABN) and saw the link on the Business.gov.au website to register a business name. I registered the name Loveday Writing and I haven’t looked back.

I’m not making much money with my business at the moment as three out of the five businesses I work for aren’t paying me, but I still get exposure and an expanded portfolio with this work. With some things in life I say to myself “I wish I did this days/weeks/months/years ago!” But with my business, it is the first thing in my life I’m glad I didn’t do days/weeks/months/years ago. I’m glad I didn’t establish the business this year. The reason why I’ve been able to get work is due to the fact that I am doing a double degree which is five years long, my last year is next year and I believe that the journalism skills have made me more employable and it’s the journalism subjects that I am finishing off next year.

I’m hoping one day that my business will make enough money that I can live off it, but for now, I’m enjoying the build up.
