ABC Open Stories—How We Met
BEST FRIENDS FOREVER
Everyone makes friends in their lives, some people find it easier than others, but I’ve generally had no problem making friends no matter where I am.
I met my posse’ the day I moved to Wollongong, the University of Wollongong’s Campus East accommodation to be exact. It was February 20, 2010 and I was excited, nervous and terrified to start my new life. I didn’t mean them all at once. I met Luci first in Campus East’s dining room when I was having an early dinner before going to the Block Party, which is basically a “welcoming everyone to Campus East party” that they throw every year so everyone can get to know each other. I was sitting at a table alone when she asked if the seat next to me was taken, I told her it wasn’t and I sat down. Alice and Claire joined the table later on. We chatted for a while and then left to get ready for the party. We agreed to meet at reception so we could walk together with the other first years.
About an hour later, I got to reception to find that Luci and Alice were there but not Claire, I found them talking to a guy. I went up and they introduced me to them, his name was Sean. Luci, Alice and Sean walked beside me and we chatted our way to the nearby pub. When we got there, we as well as everyone else there were given stickers which had a word on it and we had to find the person who had another sticker with the matching word. My sticker said “smooth” and I had to find “rough”. “Rough” turned out to be a girl from Wisconsin who I introduced myself too but never saw again.
I spent the whole night with Luci, Alice and Sean dancing away and have the occasional (soft) drink when needed, we eventually found Claire with other people from her block, we also met another person who would join our posse’, Simon. At about 11pm, I told Luci, Alice and Sean that I was going home and I would talk to them later, only to realise during the taxi ride home that I didn’t get their last names or mobile numbers. Luckily I found them at the Welcoming BBQ the next day, Sean had told me that they had been looking for me all day.
Over the years, several people have joined and expanded our posse’: Susie, Carrie, Zak, Ashleigh, Andrew, Luke, Marc and James to name a few. We have all stuck together during stressful assessments, moves, illnesses, drunken nights and now graduations.
To my posse’ I love you all, you have made my university experience the best experience of my life and I hope we all stick together into the next chapters of our lives. If I have forgotten anyone both in this story and in the collage photo I have made, I am sorry, but you know I love you.
