Upload – Season 3, Episode 4 (Download Doctor)
Now that we’re at the halfway point of the season, it’s time for the season to head in a different direction.
The episode picks up from where we were left off where Nora panics at the sight of Nathan’s nosebleed. Nora and Nathan decide to go and see the doctor who invented download to figure out what to do. Nathan tells Nora that they shouldn’t tell the doctor he’s a download so he can keep lying low.
Meanwhile, Aleesha and Nora have gone to San Francisco on a business trip, when Aleesha discovers that Nora is nearby and calls her. When Nora lies to her about being in San Francisco, she decides not to tell her that she’s nearby.
Back at Lakeview, Luke discovers that the upload funding for veterans is ending, and Nathan takes Ingrid down to the very first floor, the first floor of Lakeview 1.0 Beta version, as it has a bar with a free drunk setting. Tinsley is then alerted that Nathan is no longer in the system and starts restoring another back-up version of him.
Whilst Luke is at the bar, he talks to Yang through one of the 2Gig windows and she tells him about a warehouse where he can find work. Back in the real world, Nora and Nathan go to the doctor’s house under the guise of needing help after being ambushed. Aleesha and Lucy then go to the Founders Grove for a work presentation, where Aleesha mentions the lack of diversity in Lakeview, attracting the attention of Karina, a high-level Horizen manager.
When the doctor can’t find anything wrong with Nathan, Nora tells him that Nathan is a download and he’s had nosebleeds. The doctor then gives him pills to take and tells them to leave. Meanwhile, Oliver Kannerman visits Choak in Lakeview, as Choak asked him to look for Nathan. Choak tells him to beef up security for a meeting being held that evening.
Meanwhile, Luke finds the warehouse in the Grey Zone and discovers he’ll be working as a telemarketer, which he takes to very quickly. Back in the real world, Nathan takes Nora to the apartment of his friend, Holden, so they’ll have a bed for the night, however it’s later revealed that Holden is one of Nathan’s ex-girlfriends, when she comes home. Holden tells them that her law firm looked into suing Freeyond, only to find they were a non-profit. Nora then tells Holden everything that happened. Holden tells Nora that she thinks she can start a class action suit against Freeyond and asks Nora to come onboard and work with her.
Back at Lakeview, Backup Nathan and Ingrid have fun in the very first floor, until one of the uploads left behind tries to steal Nathan’s life force, and Ingrid saves him. In the warehouse, when Luke finishes work for the day, he notices a wanted sign for AI Guys from any upload company. Meanwhile, Choak tries to login into his meeting virtually, only to be blocked from it. Choak then asks Ivan to find a robot body for him to crash the meeting in. When Ivan makes a joke, Choak blackmails him with his knowledge that he has sex with his cleaning device.
After Ingrid saves Nathan, Tinsley manages to quickly stop another back-up from activating. Back in the real world, Aleesha hooks up with Karina, and the episode ends with Ivan having a panic attack as he is holding Choak’s hard drive.
Overall, this was a solid episode to mark the halfway point of the season. The Freeyond story arc is now going in another direction with the introduction of Holden and the class action suit against the upload companies, which could mean the upload companies could actually face consequences for their actions which could also mean more obstacles for Nathan and Nora’s relationship. Ivan stealing Choak’s hard drive also adds another layer to this story arc, as he’s no longer an obstacle or a threat (at least not at the moment).
On a smaller note, Aleesha’s hook up with a senior manager could cause problems for her at work down the road, and it will be interesting to see where Luke’s not-so-legitimate job will take him.
