Upload – Season 3, Episode 3 (CyberDiscountDay)
This episode is all about secrets coming out.
The episode kicks off with Nathan having another nose bleed as he realises that Jamie has died. Nathan and Nora then make their way to the Charlie Munger Reduced Circumstance Housing (homeless shelter) to find a bed for the night, where he finds Viv staying there (and Mauricio is with her).
Back at Lakeview, CyberDiscountDay (mentioned by Bill in the previous episode) is underway, with Ingrid trying to order things, only to be told she has insufficient funds. When Nathan asks her why she’s worrying about money, she leaves, telling him that she has to go to the salon in the real world. Meanwhile, Aleesha is showing her family around Lakeview, where her sister comments on the lack of diversity, when Lucy forces her to work despite giving her the day off. It’s later revealed that back in the real world, Aleesha is printing dinner for her entire family at her new apartment. Meanwhile, Horizen equipment is delivered to Nora, so she can work remote shifts, and Nathan goes to a temp agency to try and find work.
Back at Lakeview, Luke and Aleesha talk about CyberDiscountDay, and Aleesha mentions needing time off, the AI Guy overhears this and Luke explains the concept to him. Whilst Nora is working, she notices Ingrid and Tinsley talking, where it’s revealed that Ingrid’s family cut her off and she blackmails Tinsley into getting her free meals. When she goes to Nathan’s suite, she finds Backup Nathan singing in the shower.
Back at Aleesha’s apartment, her mother and brother ruin the ham that she was printing, and Luke calls her to tell her the AI Guys are taking time off. The AI Guys reveal that Luke (whom they call Pastor Luke) told them about the concept of time off. Aleesha offers to throw a dinner party for the AI Guys if they promise to work hard for the rest of the night.
Back in the real world, Nathan sees a help wanted sign for a human employee at the VR suit rental store and discovers Ingrid is working there. Ingrid reveals that her family cut her off because they thought she was too obsessed with him. When he asks her about the help wanted sign, she tells him that was supposed to be taken down when she started, she then tells him that the meat printing plant are looking for workers during the holiday and the plant lets the staff keep the misprints.
When Nathan brings home a ham printed in the shape of a turkey, he tells Nora about Ingrid’s job and Nora tells him about his back-up in Lakeview. When Aleesha discovers her family started eating dinner without her (and criticised it) she goes back to Lakeview, to find that Luke and the AI Guys waited for her before they started eating.
When Ingrid finishes work for the day, she goes back to Lakeview, she breaks down and tells Nathan about her family cutting her off and getting a job. Nathan tells her that he’s grateful and proud of her. When he realises that he hasn’t heard from Viv, he calls her in the real world. Real Nathan wants to talk to him, but Nora holds him back.
The episode ends with Nathan starting to have a nosebleed in front of Nora.
Overall, this was another solid episode with secrets coming out left and right, from Ingrid’s job to Nathan’s nosebleeds. I also appreciated the character growth across the board from Ingrid helping real world Nathan out with a job, to Luke and the AI Guys showing kindness to Aleesha when her family didn’t.
