Minx – Season 2, Episode 2 (I Thought the Bed was Gonna Fly)

Now that the premiere has come and gone, the fun can begin with the progression of the season’s story arcs.

This episode kicks off in a similar way to the previous one, only this time, Doug is going to Westwood Village, along with Tina, Bambi, Constance, and Richie to the premiere of Deep Throat. Disaster strikes moments in with the reels for the film disappearing from the projection room. Doug sends Richie and Tina to producer, Robert Evans,’ house to get a copy of the film and brings Joyce on stage to talk to attendees to stall (with Joyce arriving late as she was trying to write her editor’s letter).

Meanwhile, Bambi runs into Shelly and Lenny at the premiere. Shelly makes it clear that she tried (but failed) to hide the premiere invite from Lenny. Bambi is friendly and welcoming to Lenny, making Shelly nervous. Whilst Doug is waiting for Tina’s return, the police arrive, informing Doug that the film can’t be shown as it’s illegal, taking away the canisters that hold the reels, unaware that the reels are missing.

Meanwhile, as they are getting the reels, Richie calls Tina out on dropping out of college to continue working for Doug as his secretary. Richie ends up bonding and flirting with Robert’s assistant, Kevin. Back at Westwood Village, despite an awkward start, Joyce ends up winning the crowd (which includes Warren Beatty) over by talking about the clitoris. When Joyce sees Shelly leave and go to the bathroom, she follows her and they run into Joan Didion, with Joyce asking her to write about Deep Throat for Minx.

After Tina drops off the first three reels, Richie arrives just in time to bring the remaining reels, but not before he and Joyce run into each other and he drops them. They eventually figure out which is the next reel, just in time for the projectionist, Timmy, to getting it going for the attendees.

After the movie premiere, the gang throws an impromptu afterparty (organised by Joyce to lure Joan Didion to Minx). Over the course of the party, Bambi realises that she’s not having any fun as Chief Fun Officer, Joan makes Joyce realise that she has pretty much written the article on Deep Throat in her head which leads to Joyce using it as her editor’s letter, Tina quits calling Doug out on his treatment of her on her way out, Lenny tells Shelly he wanted to have fun with her as he knows something is going on with her, and Constance makes Doug realise that he did in fact give Joan the bigger office, much to his chagrin.

Overall, I felt that this was a solid second episode of the season as it shows progression of Minx, but also certain troubles that may lie ahead with Doug clearly bothered by the fact that he indeed has the smaller office, Tina quitting, and Doug realising that porn has gone mainstream and what that could mean for Minx. I was also happy to see a love interest introduced for Richie, and Lenny being the life of the party. I appreciate that Lenny is being given screen time and character development, however I feel like it has more to do with Shelly and Bambi’s secret and the fact that it will come out sooner or later, as opposed to the writers being interested in developing him on his own.

Stray Observations:

Episode title – The reaction of a teenage girl watching Deep Throat, which was accidentally delivered to her birthday party instead of Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

-Doug thinks nonpareils are disgusting.

-Tina can decipher “speaker gibberish.”

-Bambi refers to herself as the CFO: Chief Fun Officer.

-Bambi was able to identify one of Minx’s fans, Wayne, through his dick pics, according to her Wayne has a Purple Heart.

-Ernest Borgnine and Warren Beatty came to blows in the parking lot, Ernie dropped with one punch.

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “Are we sure that Deep Throat is really putting our best foot forward?” “Oh, I think so, it’s a real feminist tale. It’s about a woman searching for an orgasm.” “Yeah, which she finds via a clitoris conveniently located inside of her mouth?” “It’s always in the last place you look.” (Joyce-Doug-Tina on using hosting the Deep Throat premiere)
  • “Apprentice? The woman’s nearly 70 years old.” “Miss Lansbury’s in her early 40s, she just has one of those faces.” (Doug-Timmy on Angela Lansbury)
  • “Do you judge people when they get cavities or is it nice to feel needed?” (Bambi to Lenny on his job as a dentist)
