New Analysis Series – Disney animated feature films and their film making eras

Now that the first run of Behind the Reviews has concluded, today another analysis content series will be launched focusing on all 60+ Disney animated feature films and their film making eras.

Admittedly this analysis content series is a bit of a self-indulgent project – although I have seen some Disney animated feature films and loved them, I haven’t seen all of them, let alone all of them in order. One interesting discovery I made during the peak of COVID-19 isolation and social restrictions was the fact that there are (currently) eight Disney animated film eras that all the films fall under.

Golden Age (1937-1942)

  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • Pinocchio
  • Fantasia
  • Dumbo
  • Bambi

The Wartime Era (1943-1949)

  • Saludos Amigos
  • The Three Caballeros
  • Make Mine Music
  • Fun and Fancy Free
  • Melody Time
  • The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

The Silver Age (1950-1967)

  • Cinderella
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Peter Pan
  • Lady and the Tramp
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • One Hundred and One Dalmatians
  • The Sword and the Stone
  • The Jungle Book

The Bronze Age (1970-1988)

  • The Aristocats
  • Robin Hood
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • The Rescuers
  • The Fox and the Hound
  • The Black Cauldron
  • The Great Mouse Detective
  • Oliver & Company

The Renaissance Era (1989-1999)

  • The Little Mermaid
  • The Rescuers Down Under
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Aladdin
  • The Lion King
  • Pocahontas
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • Hercules
  • Mulan
  • Tarzan

The Post-Renaissance Era (1999-2008)

  • Fantasia 2000
  • Dinosaur
  • The Emperor’s New Groove
  • Atlantis: The Lost Empire
  • Lilo & Stitch
  • Treasure Planet
  • Brother Bear
  • Home on the Range
  • Chicken Little
  • Meet the Robinsons
  • Bolt

The Revival Era (2009-2019)

  • The Princess and the Frog
  • Tangled
  • Winnie the Pooh
  • Wreck-It Ralph
  • Frozen
  • Big Hero 6
  • Zootopia
  • Moana
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet
  • Frozen II

The Streaming Era (2020-present)

  • Raya and the Last Dragon
  • Encanto
  • Strange World

I made this discovery when I watched YouTube videos by Modern Mouse on each era, however when I conducted further research on the internet, I found that there is some debate and variation in regards to when some of these eras started and ended. I wasn’t able to find a clear answer on whether the Revival Era is the current one, or whether the Streaming Era is current, due to the affects the COVID-19 pandemic had on movie releases.  I’ll be putting a list of references below so you can see where I got my information on the eras from and I do apologise in advance for any errors.

I’ll be pairing my analysis content on each film with an introduction to each era before I get into them, and my ranking of each film within each era, and a poll asking everyone what their favourite movie was of the era, when I come to the end of each one.

Stay tuned and I hope you come with me on and enjoy this journey of Disney’s animated feature films.
