After the Verdict – Season 1, Episode 5
The job of a season’s penultimate episode is to provide a springboard for the finale, I felt this episode did its job.
The episode kicks off with Clara waking up in the middle of the night as she hears banging, only to discover Margie is making chicken schnitzels for her and the kids, as she’s struggling to sleep alone. Meanwhile, Heidi breaks into her parent’s safe and steals some of her mother’s jewellery. As she deletes the security footage of her doing this, she sees footage of Angus and Clara talking by the gate.
Later, Dom comes over to tell Clara that their insurance company approved the payout for the store and tells her that his share is not enough money to rebuild his business in Sydney, but it is enough to do so in Canberra. Clara doesn’t want him to move, but he tries to convince her to invest her share in the business so he doesn’t have to as he apparently doesn’t want an ugly custody battle. Meanwhile, Margie goes back to her house to see Trish, and Trish asks Margie if her recent behaviour is because of cold feet. Margie says it isn’t, and that she and the others kept investigating as it didn’t feel right to turn their backs on Belinda.
Later, Clara goes to yoga and Heidi surprises her. When Heidi questions her about the footage showing her talking to Angus, Clara lies and says she stood up for her. Heidi tells her that Angus is now the CEO of the family business, and wants to stay with her now that she has been cut off. When Clara brings up the insurance money and Dom’s request, Heidi tells her that the fire was what she needed to get her life back on track and asks her if she was grateful, Clara says she was, noticing a weird look on her face. Afterwards, Clara shows Margie, Ollie, and Daniel footage of Heidi and Belinda at work drinks the night before Belinda was killed, where Belinda thanks her employees, but not Heidi, for saving the business, and Heidi gives her the same look.
The next day, Daniel and Clara go to see Paul and asks about the work drinks and business. Paul tells them there was a period where the business had cash flow issues but she inherited some money after her father died and she used it to get it back on track. They ask if Heidi knew Belinda was going to inherit the money. Paul tells them he noticed that Belinda’s family photo album was open on her desk, which he found odd as she never looked at pictures of her father. Meanwhile, Heidi goes to Dom’s house and calls him out on using the kids as a bargaining tool to bully Clara into investing her share of the insurance money into his business.
After their visit with Paul; Margie, Ollie, Clara and Daniel go to Paul and Belinda’s apartment and get the family album. Later, Ollie finds Eliza on her run and tells her that they’ve found a motive for Belinda’s murder. He tells her about Belinda’s inheritance and that Heidi could have pushed her off the roof and asks her to get the police to look into not only Belinda’s death, but also her father’s death.
Later, Margie and Ollie visit Margie’s mum in the hospice, he admits to her that he liked Eliza and he doesn’t really like anyone. He asks her about her relationship with her mother, and Margie tells him that her mother liked Trish but never acknowledged their relationship as she was from a different time. After Ollie uses up the hand cream Margie puts on her mother’s hands, they discover that the cream has been discontinued, much to Margie’s annoyance. This leads to an outburst, which then leads to her seeing Trish at the hospital and telling her that she doesn’t allow her to express her negative emotions. She also admits that she shouldn’t have lied to her, and Trish admits that she’s also struggled to sleep alone.
Meanwhile, Clara goes to pick up the kids but Dom won’t let her, telling her about Heidi showing up. He tells her that as long as Heidi’s out there, she’s not going anywhere near them. Clara meets up with Heidi at yoga again and brings up her visiting Dom, but lies about the outcome. Heidi then suggests they buy a house together. When they look at a house, Clara brings up Belinda’s father’s death and Heidi tries to change the subject, although she eventually tells Clara that he died in his sleep, even though he died from falling down a flight of stairs.
Meanwhile, Margie makes a romantic dinner for Trish and shows her their wedding rings, which she picked up. Trish encourages her to express her negative emotions, and gives her approval to see Clara when she calls. Daniel goes to see Eliza and tells her he wants to cut a deal for taking the bribe.
Heidi goes over to Clara’s and tells her that she’s being tried again for Belinda’s murder, revealing that she knows Daniel took the bribe. Heidi then turns the tables by making out Clara is ungrateful for her “help”. Clara goes to see Daniel, where he reveals to her that he got a suspended sentence with community service and has been put on a two-year good behaviour bond for taking the bribe. While Daniel views it as a good thing Heidi is being retried, Clara tells him that it feels like Heidi is always one step ahead of everyone.
Towards the end of the episode, Zoe is studying in the library and is approached by a random girl with a free ticket to a Betty Litchfield concert. When Daniel goes to the library to pick Zoe up, she is gone and he can’t get a hold of her on her phone. When he calls Clara for help, he tells her that Heidi is staying at her parent’s farmhouse, he goes to the farmhouse and finds blood inside, ending the episode on a cliffhanger.
Overall, I felt that this was a solid penultimate episode as it made it clear Heidi is guilty and with the possibility that she has kidnapped Zoe in retaliation for Daniel turning himself in. I also appreciated the character development with Ollie, Margie and Trish.
It will be interesting to see where the finale takes us.
Stray Observations:
-According to Trish, Margie made 622 shish kebabs when her mother had a stroke.
Best one liners and interactions:
- “You’ve been butchering your emotions again, haven’t you?” “Yep.” (Trish-Margie on the excess chicken schnitzel Margie made)
