Behind the Reviews – Edition #7 (Fisk)

Fisk premiered on 17 March 2021 on the ABC. Fisk revolves “around the life of lawyer, Helen Tudor-Fisk, who leaves Sydney after her career and marriage fall apart. She returns to Melbourne and takes a job at Gruber & Gruber, a small suburban firm, specialising in wills and probate.”

Fisk was a show my mother recommended to me, as opposed to one I came across in the annual TV Week Previews Edition. One season consisting of six episodes aired last year, with the second season due to air at some point this year.

Overall I enjoyed watching and reviewing Fisk. While I knew it was a comedy from the first moment I started watching, mainly due to the show’s cast being made up of Australian comedy veterans, I also appreciated the show’s strong writing filled with comedic moments between the characters, as well as the subplots involving Helen’s client of the week, and the comedic irony of a slightly goofy workplace sitcom in a workplace that provide essentially tragic services. I also appreciated Helen’s character development from a socially awkward but competent solicitor who had trouble fitting in at her new workplace, to a more settled and confident one who embraced her new life.

I honestly loved Helen’s goofy clients ranging from a man who paints portraits with his penis, to a kleptomaniac mother and daughter, to a daughter and young girlfriend of a late elderly man fighting over his “cremains”. The cases provided both comedic elements and the opportunity to showcase Helen’s skills as a solicitor. I also appreciated the relevant post-credit scenes, which showed that the writers never wasted any comedic moments and opportunities.

The season ended well with many callbacks to the previous episodes and Helen keeping her job at Gruber & Gruber, despite the job initially being temporary.

The 2022 TV Week Previews Edition didn’t give any details of what’s in store for Fisk’s second season but I am looking forward to watching and reviewing it.

Behind the Reviews – Edition #8 will be released next week and will focus on Five Bedrooms.
