Charmed (Reboot) – Season 4, Episode 10 (Hashing It Out)

This episode was all about the girls’ loves lives and the invasion of the Unseen on the Command Centre.

The episode kicks off showing the progression of Roxie and Camelia’s relationship and how Roxie’s Circadian nature affected and ultimately led to the end of their relationship. We see Roxie going to sleep and waking up in the 1940s, 1960s, and another unknown period of time, shown through how Camelia is dressed and with the final time, not waiting for Roxie at all.

When she wakes up the final time, she finds that the Blue Camelia has been destroyed, with Camelia’s scarf bloodied on the bar. We then see Roxie wake up from hooking up with Mel in the present day, with Duncan knocking on the door to tell Roxie her appointment is here. Roxie’s appointment is with Harry. Mel runs into Harry on the way out and he tells her he’s going into the Veil to find Camelia.

Meanwhile, Jordan is training in SafeSpace when Maggie comes to see him. Maggie has shown up to give Jordan back his stuff, they end up kissing and hooking up. Meanwhile, Kaela and Dev are on a date in the Manor and Kaela declares they’re in a relationship. Meanwhile two Unseen Members meet up and exchange magical items. One item is Naiad gemstones, which are given in exchange for a portal marble to get into the Command Centre.

When Harry and Roxie meet up, he tells her that he can bring back people from the Veil, but it has ramifications and is only temporary. Roxie tells him that she only wants to say a proper goodbye to Camelia because she needs closure, as she only has a couple of days left before she goes into another seven-year rest. Meanwhile, the woman who got the portal marble has infiltrated the Command Centre, bringing many magical creatures, including Sunny, with her.

Sunny sends them all to find the Unity Bowl, which Mel discovers has put itself back together. When one of the beings releases Seymour from the Vittra Bag, he kills Sunny, which leaves her with four lives.

Meanwhile, Harry uses Camelia’s scarf to go into the Veil. When he arrives, he doesn’t find Camelia but a banshee coming towards him. A mysterious woman, presumably another Necrolighter, gets Harry out of the Veil and into Infinite Home Video, a video rental store on another plane that has videos of the world’s history.

Meanwhile, Mel is making her way to the Command Centre when she runs into Maggie post-Jordan hook up. When they get in there, they find the Command Centre vandalised by the Unseen and are ambushed by them. One of the Unseen darts them and their powers are gone. Mel and Maggie try to run, getting upstairs to SafeSpace, only to find that Sunny has cast a containment spell to prevent them from escaping.

Mel and Maggie make their way into Ruby’s office so Mel can use the landline to get Kaela to help them. While Kaela initially misses the call, her phone goes off, and she and Dev listen to the voicemail. Meanwhile, Mel and Maggie try to find a matchbook to get back into the Blue Camelia. Jordan pulls Maggie into an elevator, and tries to heal the dart mark, but he can’t as it’s not technically an injury. A troll makes the elevator move, and Maggie subdues him by hiding in the elevator and kicking him down.

Meanwhile in the Infinite Home Video store, the mysterious necrolighter tells Harry that she was sent into the video store 15 years ago but she can’t get back into the real world. She also tells him that she used to be a whitelighter. Harry tells her that if she was a whitelighter he’d know her, and then asks how she survived the death of the Elders. She doesn’t give him a clear answer but tells him that as he was led to a banshee, he was set up. He leaves and comes back to the real world, where he finds her business card on the floor of Ruby’s office.

When Harry picks up the scarf, he remembers that Roxie told him that Duncan told her Camelia was wearing the scarf. Harry confronts Duncan and asks what he did and what happened. Duncan tells him that Roxie and Camelia’s relationship wasn’t always an epic romance. He was an orphan and they took him in and he helped Camelia with the bar when Roxie slept. He also tells Harry that Camelia loved Roxie deeply, but seven years without her made her lonely and the bar became a prison to her. One night there was a fight in the bar, some demons were after a banshee. The fight on top of the politics, the dangers of running the bar alone, the pressure and the loneliness all became too much for Camelia, so she blew out her candle and left. He also tells Harry that he never told Roxie this, as he was afraid she’d close the bar as it’s the only safe place for many magical creatures, himself included.

Meanwhile, the troll catches up with Maggie and Jordan in SafeSpace. The troll tells them that Maggie is the reason his brother is dead, as Kaela manifests a door to get her and Dev inside. Dev subdues the troll, and he, Kaela, Maggie and Jordan try to come up with a plan. Dev says that the darts in their necks are from a blocker (the woman who darted them). Maggie gets a video call from Mel, only to discover Sunny has hurt Mel and is holding her hostage, demanding the Unity Bowl. Dev tells them that the dart only works if the blocker is meditating, and therefore open to an attack, and Sunny doesn’t know he’s there with them.

When Maggie, Kaela and Jordan get to the Command Centre, they find Mel tied up with three Unseen members coming after them. Kaela asks where Sunny is, and it’s revealed that she was upstairs in SafeSpace. She gives Dev a Blue Camelia matchbook to get away as she claims it’s not his fight, but he declines and takes out the blocker, giving the girls back their powers. Mel and Maggie fight the Unseen as Kaela hears Dev’s screams.

Meanwhile, Harry goes to tell Roxie the truth about Duncan and Camelia, only to find that due to being able to hear everything that goes on in the bar, she already knew. Harry asks her what she’s going to do. She tells him that she’ll grieve Camelia. He then asks what she’s going to do about Duncan as she’s holding his candle in her hand. She tells him that Duncan is all she has left too and puts his candle down.

Kaela goes upstairs to find Dev dead on the floor and Sunny waiting for her. Sunny says she’s going to kill her and that she has four lives to her one. Kaela uses Dev’s blood on her hands to manifest away Sunny’s lives by drawing the four remaining tally marks on a window. Meanwhile, Mel and Maggie manage to fight off the remaining Unseen members in the Command Centre.

While Kaela asks to be alone after Dev’s death, Mel and Maggie put the bowl in the Tomb of Chaos. When they return, Maggie finds Jordan waiting for her in her bedroom, as he wanted to check that she was okay, and she asks him to stay. Mel goes to the Blue Camelia and tells Roxie that Harry told her what happened, and that she’s not going anywhere, and they hook up. Kaela finds an enchanted teapot that Dev left for her.

Meanwhile, Harry goes back to the Infinite Home Video store, only for the necrolighter to knock him unconscious. The troll who survived Dev’s attack goes back to the remaining Unseen members with the Book of Shadows.

The final moments of the episode show magical steam coming out of the teapot once it boils, with Dev’s voice singing Kaela’s name. Kaela breaks down and cries, moments later, Mel and Maggie come to comfort her.

Full disclosure, Dev’s death was revealed to me prior to watching the episode, thanks to getting a Twitter notification about a tweet from Joey Falco spoiling the reveal. Apparently due to the show’s cancellation he doesn’t seem to care about revealing them anymore, or at least this one. I get that he’s sad about the show being cancelled, but don’t spoil the remaining episodes for your fans (and in my case, a reviewer). Despite this, his death was well written and the performances by Talwalkar and Barrett were fantastic.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I appreciated the insight into Roxie and Camelia’s relationship and the reveal of why it broke down. I, at first thought Camelia died as she was so loyal, but she left Roxie, however I understand why she did. If she’s still alive and she clearly didn’t age during her time with Roxie, maybe she’ll come back at some point in the remaining three episodes. I’m not hopeful or holding my breath, I’m just acknowledging it’s a possibility. I also appreciated the reveal that Duncan was an orphan that Roxie and Camelia took in, although whether he’s magical or human wasn’t made clear, as he’s aged but knows about the magical world. He could have just been a random magical creature, but I love the writers’ choice to give him depth and a deep, maternal connection to Roxie.

Mel and Maggie weren’t exactly in the background in this episode, but I didn’t feel they were centre stage either. That being said, Diaz and Jeffery put on good performances during their fight scenes. There was also a hint of Jordan and Maggie possibly getting back together, however whether they do remains to be seen.

Harry’s subplot was the most mysterious with him meeting (apparently) another whitelighter-turned-necrolighter, however whether she’s legitimate remains to be seen, especially as she knocked him unconscious when he tried to find her again. She clearly has an agenda and I’m looking forward to finding out what it is.

I was surprised that Sunny was vanquished and pleased that it was Kaela, showing how powerful she can be when she sets her mind to it. However, Sunny wasn’t the real threat, the Unseen as a whole is the big threat, proven when the troll managed to steal the Book of Shadows.

It will be interesting to see where we go from here with Sunny being vanquished, Dev being killed, and the girls without the Book of Shadows.
