Charmed (Reboot) – Season 4, Episode 9 (Truth or Cares)
I’m going to start this review by addressing the proverbial elephant in the room – the news that Charmed has been cancelled and this season will be its last.
The news broke about three days ago that the CW cancelled the show. I personally found out about it as I follow one of the show’s writers, Joey Falco, on Twitter. In my personal opinion, as the show was a reboot of another show which aired over 15-20 years ago, and due to history repeating itself with Mantock’s departure and Barrett’s arrival, as well as what I feel has been a decline in quality (writing-wise) this season, I wasn’t that surprised.
However, considering the backlash that the show endured, especially being a reboot, prior to premiering in 2018, how it has developed over time, and how Kaela was written in as a replacement Charmed One and why (which was revealed in this episode), I feel that this incarnation of Charmed has done well for itself, and the cast and crew should be proud of what they’ve achieved. It will be interesting to see how the season (and now the series as a whole) ends, as the writers would have written the finale as a season finale, hoping but not knowing if the series was going to be renewed. I’m sure it won’t be the perfect send off, purely for that aforementioned reason, but I hope it will still be a good ending nonetheless.
Anyway, back to the review of this week’s episode.
This episode opens with Jordan healing Ray, as he’s still cursed and his health seems to be deteriorating even further, as he passed out on the Manor’s staircase. It’s revealed that Ray knows about the Unseen, and wants Maggie and Mel to increase the security of the Manor as he noticed that a rosebush in the yard was dug up. It’s also revealed that Jordan is living in the Manor, to help take care of Ray.
When Maggie screams in frustration at Ray and goes to the kitchen, Jordan follows her and they end up talking about their failed relationship. Maggie points out to Jordan when he talks about missing her that he broke up with her as she ‘wasn’t the person he fell in love with’, but he counters that he hit the ‘pause button’. They both hear a crash in the attic and go up there to find it a mess and Dexter there. When Ray walks in and sees Dexter, he angrily tackles him.
Meanwhile, Mel, Kaela and Dev are sitting in a car on a stakeout outside of an abandoned church, on the hunt for the Unseen. They see Sunny go in, and Mel and Kaela follow. When Mel and Kaela see two closed doors on either side of the altar, they split up. Mel goes through a door, down to a basement.
Back at the Manor, Ray and Dexter keep fighting over Maggie, until Maggie breaks up the fight and Ray goes downstairs. Dexter tells Maggie that he tried to help Harry get out of the Veil and somehow came out with him. He also tells her that he heard about the Unity Bowl when Macy was a teenager and eventually tracked it down. He thought that he remembered Marisol burying it under her rosebush (which is why it was dug up) but it wasn’t there, and that he has searched every inch of the Manor and hasn’t been able to find it. He also reveals to Maggie that he didn’t in fact die from cancer, but from the Unity Bowl’s curse and that as spirits aren’t supposed to leave the Veil, it will have side effects on the magical world. Maggie then asks Jordan to look for Harry.
Back at the church, Sunny sneaks up on Mel and throws a sealing potion on the church floor. She tries to escape, but Mel stops her by heating up the doorknob. When Dev hears Sunny and Mel’s fight, and sees the church being sealed, he goes in and grabs Kaela, telling her that they need to leave. When they get out of the church, while it looks invisible at first, it’s revealed that it’s been shrunk and placed in a snow globe, with Sunny and Mel trapped inside. Dev tells Kaela that they walked into a trap.
Back at the Manor, Maggie tries to get Ray to talk about his acrimonious feelings towards Dexter by using Trunksie (a callback to The Tallyman Cometh when Ray tried to use Trunksie to get Maggie to open up about her anger issues). When Dexter pushes Ray into a bookshelf, he accidentally spills a toxic potion on Trunksie. Dexter then tells Maggie that her full first name, Margarita, means ‘daisy’. This leads to Dexter digging underneath Maggie’s bed as she was his and Marisol’s ‘daisy’ and they grew her. Maggie tells Trunksie that Dexter and Ray have to get along or she’s going to kill them and walks out of the attic, unknown to her, Trunksie has come to life.
Meanwhile, Kaela and Dev are in the Command Centre making a potion to free Mel. Dev tells Kaela that he knows how to make potions to disable the magical trap, as he dated witches in his past that knew about them. Dev asks Kaela about her meeting with her birth parents, but Kaela doesn’t want to confide in Dev, still wanting a casual relationship. Dev also tells her that once the potion is done and activated, Mel will only have 30 seconds to get outside the church and they need to find a way to warn her.
Meanwhile, Jordan finds Harry at the Blue Camelia, who has returned from the Veil and his body has been healed without any explanation. Harry suggests to Jordan that they consult with the Graiai, a trio of ancient magical seers who know all truth. When Jordan sees a trio of young, drunk, magical women, Harry reveals that they’re the Graiai.
Meanwhile, whilst they are trapped in the snow globe, Mel and Sunny are constantly fighting each other, but they stop for a while as the conditions within the snow globe are deteriorating. Mel asks Sunny why she hates her, Sunny tells her that she was attacked by the Faction two years ago and lost everything. Mel apologises to Sunny for what she went through and that she and her sisters tried everything they could to stop them. Sunny counters that she and the other Unseen felt that they weren’t protected or included, however Mel points out that an Unseen and Lost One uprising will only lead to another magical hierarchy. Mel then offers to work with her.
Back at the Manor, Trunksie goes after Ray by strangling him to try and make the home happy. Maggie saves him, but Trunksie manages to get away and ends up stealing the Unity Bowl and attacking Dexter. Maggie ends up finding the old Trunksie board game that the stuffed Trunksie is based on, and tells them that they need to play the game to lure the stuffed Trunksie out of hiding. As they play the game, Maggie has to ask a scary question, and she asks Dexter whether he thinks Macy is watching over them. Dexter tells her that when it used to rain, Macy used to rescue worms from the sidewalk, she also saved her lunch money for six months straight so a friend of hers could go to science camp, and when she thought he had cancer she donated stem cells for an experimental cancer treatment, the Progenitor Project, to try and save his life. He also tells her that Macy was his angel then and he has no doubt that she still is now.
Moments later, Trunksie is revealed to be watching from a vent and comes out. Maggie tries to incept Trunksie to sleep and almost succeeds, only for Trunksie to call her a liar and run off. When Ray asks if it’s opposite day as her powers kept Trunksie awake, she starts to think it is due to Dexter’s earlier comment on his being back on Earth having side effects on magic. As she remembers that a toxic potion brought Trunksie to life, she thinks her powers have reversed. Dexter and Ray want to get out of the Manor and bail, but she tells them they’re not giving up, and ends up having a brief heart-to-heart with both of them. She tells Dexter that without him she wouldn’t exist and tells Ray that he made her the woman she is today. She also tells them that they’re both her dads and she loves them. They promise not to fight again, but Maggie encourages them to do so as she believes this will lure Trunksie out.
Meanwhile, Harry and Jordan go to see the Graiai with champagne and glasses in hand. The Graiai already know who they are and why they’ve come to see them. While Harry tries to ask about the Bowl, the Graiai want to know more about Jordan and Maggie’s relationship. They ask Jordan about his future with Maggie and he tells them that he thinks they have a shot. They tell him and Harry that removing the curse is easy as only a potion and spell is required to do so. Jordan and Harry make a potion in a forest, only for it to blow up on them, the Graiai having pranked them.
When Harry and Jordan go back to the Blue Camelia to get an explanation from the Graiai, one of them, Pam, sees Jordan. She tells him that her sisters wanted to punish him for not holding up his end of the deal of being truthful. She tells him that he told them the truth in his head, but not his heart and she shows it to him. Afterwards, she recites the spell that will break Ray’s curse.
Back at the Command Centre, Kaela pours the finished potion over the snow globe and writes a message on its surface telling Mel to get to the church door. This is complicated by Sunny passing out from a concussion. Mel and Sunny only have seconds to get to the door or they’ll die but they manage to do so. When Kaela goes to attack Sunny, she holds a claw to Mel’s throat. Sunny admits that she almost believed Mel when she offered to work with her but that even if she wanted to change things, other people will come after them. Kaela draws and projects a knife into Mel’s hand and Dev tells Sunny that she won’t win. Mel gets out of her grasp and holds the knife to her throat but lowers it, Sunny escapes through the portal, which Kaela opened, neutralising Sunny and the Unseen for another day.
Meanwhile, Ray and Dexter’s fake fight doesn’t work as Trunksie sees through the lie and threatens to light the house on fire. Ray, Dexter and Maggie hide out in the attic. Ray and Dexter want to work together to get Maggie out but she refuses and when Dexter mentions Macy again, this gives her another idea. As her powers are reversed, she uses the ‘raise the dead’ spell to reverse Trunksie’s reanimation. When Dexter points out the spell will send him back to the Veil, Maggie doesn’t want to cast it, but Dexter accepts his fate and that he feels complete after meeting her. Maggie casts the spell and everything goes back to normal.
Towards the end of the episode, Ray drinks from the complete Unity Bowl and the curse is removed. Kaela and Dev meet up at the Blue Camelia and Kaela agrees to go on a proper romantic date with him. When Kaela and Mel are sitting in the backyard, Maggie comes to see them. Kaela tells her that she has a drink waiting for her. When Maggie sees the mug for her has the Progenitor Project logo on it, she asks Kaela where she got it. Kaela reveals she was part of an experimental treatment project when she had leukaemia, this leads them to realise that she received Macy’s stem cells. By receiving Macy’s stem cells, she received Macy’s blood and magical DNA, which is why she was chosen as a replacement Charmed One.
The episode ends with Harry and Jordan meeting up with the Unity Bowl. Harry asks Jordan what the Graiai showed him. Jordan tells him that the Graiai showed him what he’s been feeling but didn’t want to admit to – that he loves Maggie. However he doesn’t want to get back together with her if their relationship dynamic doesn’t change. Jordan vents his frustrations by smashing the Unity Bowl, which leads to a mysterious blue smoke coming out of it and going into the Book of Elders, which leads to pages on the Unity Bowl being created, and the Book closing.
Overall, I felt that this was a solid episode for many reasons. Maggie got the spotlight for most of the episode due to both her subplot with Ray, Dexter and Trunksie, as well as the reappearance of Jordan and the exploration of his feelings for her through the Graiai subplot. I appreciated Maggie finally meeting Dexter and her essentially resolving her issues with both of them. I didn’t really care for Trunksie coming to life, it got old fast. In regards to Jordan’s reappearance and his feelings for Maggie, I can only guess that they will get back together eventually, and if they do, I hope the writers build up their relationship more, especially as their break-up happened offscreen and the writing of their relationship this season has been uneven.
In regards to Mel being stuck in the snow globe with Sunny, I felt having them stuck in there and Mel finding out more about Sunny’s motivations was good, but it didn’t really add anything new to the Unseen as a whole. It didn’t really progress the story arc, which I feel has been moving at a too-slow pace, but it was nice to get some character development with Sunny. I’ve seen the preview of the next episode and it looks more promising in progressing this story arc.
Again, Kaela wasn’t really in the spotlight but at least she used her powers onscreen this time. Although she didn’t really have the spotlight in this episode, she did experience character development with the long overdue reveal of how and why she became a Charmed One. While I felt that the reveal itself was very good and plausible in the context of how magic works and is inherited, I felt it should have happened an episode or two earlier. However I did appreciate that the reveal came from Dexter, Macy’s father, adding another connection between Macy and Kaela, despite them never having the chance to meet.
On a smaller note, I also loved the introduction of the Graiai and how their ancient, trustworthy, all-knowing nature was contrasted with their young, drunk, party girl appearance.
It will be interesting to see where we go from here with four episodes to go, knowing that the series is coming to an end, and the story arc of why Kaela was chosen as a Charmed One has come to a close.
Stray Observations:
-According to Maggie, Ray only calls her by her full first name, Margarita, when he’s really mad.
-Kaela mentions Brynn, her best friend who is a “ride and die” friend. I honestly completely forgot about her.
-The Graiai wear sunglasses indoors as their eyes are magically stitched shut.
Best one liners and interactions:
- “He’s been in this house for less than 24 hours and I’m contemplating Rayicide!” (Maggie to Jordan on Ray)
- “This is a stakeout not a make-out, people!” (Mel to Kaela and Dev)
- “Drop dead!” “I already did!” (Ray-Dexter fake fighting)
- “Are you purring?” “It’s a biological reflex, okay!” (Mel-Sunny)
- “We never say no to offerings…or hotties!” (The Graiai to Harry and Jordan when they come over to them with a bottle of champagne)
