Almost Family – Season 1, Episode 11 (Generational AF)

This episode explores the concepts of generations, the differences between them and how they can grow (or maybe not).

The episode opens with a pregnant woman, Katie, getting an ultrasound and it’s quickly revealed that she is a surrogate for two married men. Meanwhile, Edie visits Miles in prison. Miles is excited to meet her and Edie tells him that he is a good candidate for resentencing. When Edie meets up with Julia at the diner later and her hotel key card falls out of her wallet, she admits to Julia that she’s staying at hotel as her and Amanda need space to figure out what they are as a couple.

Later, Julia goes to a spa to treat herself to find Nate there getting a pedicure. When he sees her, he tries to leave but his feet are too soaked for him to walk on. Julia sits next to him and tells him that Leon is not her biological father, which piques his interest. She also apologises to him for lying to him about her life, he accepts her apology. She also tells him that Leon doesn’t want to talk about the issue but she thinks that Sarah met her father at dance classes. When she asks him how he is, he reveals that he and Richard are having a child via surrogate, she congratulates him and he wishes her luck with her search for her father.

Meanwhile, Leon meets up with his former mentor, Ted, at a gentleman’s club and asks him to be a character witness. Edie and Tim later tell Chad they have Ted as a character witness but he tells them they need more. Edie also pitches Miles as a client to Chad, but he shuts her down saying that a pro bono case like that isn’t good for the business right now. Later, Edie tries to ask Amanda to look into the case, but she says can’t and they end up having a fight over it.

Later, Genevieve and Leon are at his apartment about to have fondue when Leon tells her that Ted is going to be his character witness. Genevieve tells him that she went to see Ted for fertility treatment before coming to see him and that Ted ignored her questions and made her feel like a fool for even asking them. When Leon tells her that he can’t pick and choose his allies, and that Ted is of a different generation, Genevieve gets upset and leaves.

Later, Nate comes to the Institute to see Julia as he thinks he may have a lead on how to find the dance studio Sarah used to go to. They later go to the Town House bar, where Nate tells Julia a generation of gay men he is in awe of hang out. Nate introduces her to Wyndham who tells her to go to Spring Street Dance studio.

Meanwhile when Ted and Leon meet with Tim to work on his character witness testimony, they witness Ted being sexist to a female staff member in the room with them and Leon changes his mind about having him as a character witness. Leon later goes to Genevieve’s store and apologises to her, he tells her that his future is uncertain and is grateful to have her as a friend.

Meanwhile, Roxy takes a walk in the park with Isaac. He tells her that he saw her statement and asks what has happened since. Roxy tells him that Nick’s gyms are being closed down and he’s under investigation. A woman comes up to her and thanks Roxy for her bravery. When the woman walks away, Roxy asks Isaac if they can still be friends and he agrees.

Later, Nate and Julia go to Spring Street Dance Studio where they met one of the teachers, Joyce, and Julia asks her if she remembers Sarah and she does. However, when Julia asks her if Sarah connected with anyone romantically in the classes, she says no.

Meanwhile, Roxy meets with Amanda at the diner. Amanda asks Roxy if her relationship with Leon is affecting her relationship with Diane and by nature, affecting Diane’s testimony, Roxy adamantly says no. Amanda’s question makes her wonder if Leon bonded with her to get to Diane. She goes to Leon’s apartment and asks him why he took such an interest in her when they first met. He tells her that he sees her as an interesting person and was happy to meet her and he’s hurt she would ask him that. He also tells her that he saw her statement which was courageous and he loves her. She tells him that she won’t testify against him but she can’t testify for him either.

Meanwhile, Edie goes to see Miles in prison and he’s excited to see her until she tells him that she can’t take on his case but that she has passed it on to people she knows. Miles is angry as the hope he had of getting released has been taken away but he does thank her for trying. Later, Chad calls Edie into his office and tells her that he’s giving his approval for her to take the case after Tim convinced him to let her take it.

Meanwhile, Leon goes to see Isaac at the Institute. Leon confides in Isaac that he’s worried his personality traits have rubbed off on him and that’s he proud of Roxy for making a decision about not testifying for him. He also asks Isaac if him and Roxy are friendly again, Isaac tells him that they’re getting there.

Later, Julia comes to see Nate to bring him a baby gift and meets Richard and Katie. She admits she’s scared of what she might find out about her mother and biological father as she keeps digging, but Nate encourages her not to give up.

The episode ends with Edie coming to visit Tim to thank him for helping with Chad and inadvertently displays a bit of jealousy at Tim dating, only for the two of them to hook up. The final moments show Julia taking a dance class with Joyce and eventually ending up dancing alone with a mysterious, unidentified person watching on from the doorway.

Overall I felt that this was a solid episode until the end. I was highly disappointed with Edie and Tim hooking up as I felt it completely threw Edie’s character development out of the window and undermined the writing of her and her relationship with Amanda.

In regards to Julia’s subplot, I appreciated a reappearance from Nate and the fact that he helped her in her search for her biological father. It will be interesting to see if the person watching her from the doorway is her father, or at least someone who can help her find him.

In regards to Roxy’s subplot, I appreciated finding out that Nick did face consequences for his predatory actions, even if they were offscreen. I also appreciated Roxy and Isaac rebuilding their friendship, I although I did question the purpose of Leon’s visit to Isaac.

The next episode is the penultimate episode of the season, and the series, as it was cancelled after one season. It will be interesting to see what that episode, the springboard for the finale, will provide for us.

Stray Observations:

-Julia expresses her worry about something bad happening as bad things always come in threes. She lists finding out Leon as her father and her break-up with Donovan as the first two things. Moments later, a waiter in the diner drops a tray of plates.

-According to Amanda, Edie is back to eating meat, apparently she was either vegan or vegetarian.

-Nate knows how to waltz.

-When Nate introduces Julia to Richard and Katie, they are painting a mural in the baby room. I don’t know anything about pregnancy safety but should a pregnant woman be near paint?

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “You know, if you were a superhero you’d be ‘The Compartmentaliser’. ‘She chops her life into little chunks, no two worlds will ever meet!’” (Roxy to Edie)
  • “We’re here, maybe we should dance!” (Nate to Julia at the dance studio)
