My Life Is Murder – Season 2, Episode 8 (Hidden Gems)

This episode is all about jewellery, lies and secrets.

The episode kicks off with Alexa confronting a courier about being home when the courier says she wasn’t. She eventually manages to get her package from the courier, which is a Split Enz vinyl record.

Later, Harry meets Alexa in the park, with his sister’s dog in tow as he’s dog sitting for her whilst she’s out of town. Harry gives Alexa the case of the week, Mariel DeMarco, owner of Ramona Church Jewellery, was murdered during a break-in at the store whilst she was working late for the store’s impending launch. The break-in and murder looks like an inside job, however Mariel’s business partners, Niki Balodis and Ramona Church had rock-solid alibis, and a note with “my apologies” written, was left behind.

Alexa and Madison interview Ramona first, who tells them that she made new jewellery to replace the pieces stolen in the broken cabinets. Afterwards, they interview Niki, who tells them that Ramona was nervous about her speech at the Awards’ Night that they attended, meditating and chanting affirmations to calm her nerves. Niki reveals that while Ramona designs the jewellery, she makes it, and Mariel provides the finances to make it possible. Both Ramona and Niki tell Alexa that they don’t know anything about how the CCTV works.

Alexa and Madison find themselves questioning why a formal apology note would be left outside the store and why a more expensive necklace would be left behind. They also question why Mariel would take four minutes to hit the panic button and wonder whether the whole situation was a murder disguised as a robbery.

Alexa and Madison discover that Mariel was about to become rich as she made a deal with manufacturers in India to mass produce Ramona’s jewellery. They also discover where the paper from the apology note came from, a courier company.

Alexa goes to see the courier, Enzo, who lives in a large house despite working multiple minimum wage jobs. Enzo tells Alexa that he was in Dubai as he is an antiques collector and was trying to make deals, however when she leaves, she finds a burger receipt in his car which contradicts his story. When she confronts him, he confesses to murdering Mariel. Enzo reveals that he left the apology note for not delivering a package on time, Mariel saw him and she hit her head.

However, Alexa and Madison don’t believe Enzo murdered Mariel as he wouldn’t have the skills to tamper with the CCTV system. Enzo did tell Alexa he noticed a black car with tinted windows by the store at around 7.45pm on the night of the murder. When Alexa talks to Ramona, she doesn’t believe Enzo committed the murder either, Enzo himself shows up at the store with flowers to pay his respects.

Later, much to her chagrin, Alexa finds Enzo talking away to Reuben at his café. Enzo tells Alexa that he’s in danger and being followed, but Alexa dismisses him and tells him to go home. On his way home, Enzo is hit by a car. Enzo tells Alexa the next day that the car that him last night was the same car he saw on the night of the murder. However when Alexa and Madison view the surveillance footage, it shows a red car hit Enzo. With the footage and the way that he dresses, Alexa concludes that Enzo is colour blind, and that the car is Niki’s, as she’s the only suspect that owns a red car.

Alexa, Madison and Harry go to the launch. Alexa confronts Niki about her car and Enzo. Niki denies hitting Enzo as she was prepping for the launch all night. When Alexa asks her about Mariel’s deal with manufacturers in India, Niki tells her that Mariel wanted her to oversee the production. During the launch, Ramona unexpectedly announces that she will be closing the store.

The next morning, Madison wakes up to find Harry leaving the apartment. On his way out he informs her that Alexa is at Reuben’s getting breakfast. We then cut to Madison arriving at the café, where Alexa is having a bigger breakfast than usual. Alexa and Madison discover that Ramona increased the business of the store within a month of Mariel’s death, and Mariel trademarked Ramona’s brand and work, which leads to the realisation that Mariel wanted the jewellery to go global but Ramona did not. They go back to the green room where Ramona was preparing for her speech at the Awards Night, with Madison going into the air vent to see where it leads. It leads Madison outside on the roof.

Alexa goes to see Ramona and tells her (and the audience) how she committed the murder. She pre-recorded herself saying affirmations to make it appear as if she was at the Awards Night the entire time. She snuck out through the air vent and drove Niki’s car to the store. Mariel caught her in the act and Ramona used a green uranium glass paperweight to hit Mariel over the head. She melted the necklaces she stole and the paperweight to make a new necklace, hiding the murder weapon in plain sight. Ramona admits to Alexa that she wanted to leave the partnership but Mariel wouldn’t let her and she had no choice. Alexa points out she did have a choice and Harry arrests her.

Meanwhile throughout the episode, Will keeps contacting Alexa. They eventually meet up, with the reveal that he sent her the Split Enz record. Alexa bought it as a kid and Will stole it, however Alexa reveals she in fact shoplifted it from a neighbourhood shop. Unsure whether Will was trying to be nice by giving it back to her, she sends him a photo of them from their childhood. The episode ends with a montage consisting of Niki making her own jewellery, Enzo still working as a courier (and milking the attention he’s getting for being a ‘hero’), and Alexa and Madison dancing to Split Enz’s I Got You.

Overall this was an interesting case of the week, specifically with the way the murder was carried out and how the murder weapon was ‘disposed’. I appreciated the comedic moments Enzo provided as well as the fact that he wasn’t a complete ‘crazy’ cliché, as he was actually onto the murderer. I was honestly just as surprised as Madison to see Harry in Alexa’s apartment. Although it’s implied that they’ve hooked up, it was never established if they did, I’d like to know where the writers are going with their dynamic as, from what I can see, Harry’s flirting has been mainly unreciprocated.

Stray Observations:

-According to Harry, his sister is very smart but also has very bad taste in dog’s names, men and reality TV. Interestingly, he didn’t reveal her name.

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “I didn’t save up for that single. I got tired of waiting, so I nicked it from the shop on the hill, and I nearly got caught doing it, ‘cause do you know how hard it is to hide a 45 under your jumper?” “Yeah, LPs are harder.” (Alexa-Will on the Split Enz record)
  • “Should I be worried that you’re inspired by a murder case?” “Should I be worried that you’re stress baking?” (Alexa-Madison)
  • “Smug doesn’t suit you as well as you think it does.” (Alexa to Madison)
  • “Do you know anything about jewellery?” “I know not to choose an engagement ring that can leave a mark when it’s thrown back in my face.” (Alexa-Harry)
