Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 13 (Chaos Theory)

This episode was all about putting Abigael on trial.

The episode kicks off with Harry waking up Macy to let her know that he’s off to see Celeste to progress his journey to mortality. Moments after Harry orbs out, Maggie calls her to tell her about Abigael and Jordan being in the Tomb of Chaos.

When the sisters confront the Perfecti in the Command Centre, they tell them that Jordan was put in the Tomb of Chaos for aiding and abetting Abigael’s actions, using a memory mirror to show them Abigael’s actions, unaware or at least unwilling to admit that Abigael was merely trying to strip herself of her demon powers with Jordan’s assistance. The Perfecti tell them that Jordan will only be set free if Abigael is proven not to be chaotic, which will be done through a trial with Lady Justitia presiding.

Before the trial starts, Mo gives the sisters the keys to the Tomb, and Mel and Maggie go in to retrieve Abigael and Jordan respectively, this time taking a potion to prevent themselves from becoming mentally affected like their previous visit. Mel finds Abigael baking away, with Abigael telling her that she has accepted her reality as her demon form can no longer torment her, and she agrees with the Perfecti’s view that she belongs there. Meanwhile Maggie has a hard time getting through to Jordan as he’s hallucinating, until she finds the First Aid kit and tells him that he gave it to her when they first met. This forces him to remember, and he identifies it as a glitch.

Throughout the trial, the Perfecti play multiple memories showing Abigael acting in an evil manner, while the sisters counter that she has saved their lives on multiple occasions, however Abigael keeps sabotaging her own defence so she can stay in the Tomb. Maggie calls for a recess and requests to see her alone in her apartment. This enables her to spike Abigael’s wine with truth serum. Under the truth serum she reveals that she deeply cares for Mel and Harry, which is why she saved and assisted them repeatedly. However Mo uses the truth serum to his advantage as well, getting her to reveal that she stole Macy’s fire power for herself.

The Perfecti call their first and final witness – Francesca. Francesca paints Abigael as an out-of-control demon child (literally) and informs everyone that the Elders recommended that she strip Abigael of her demon powers. However when the sisters question her, they point out that her methods to control and punish Abigael were cruel and abusive. The sisters then have Jordan testify, mentally broken by his time in the Tomb, pointing out that he didn’t belong there.

Despite this, the Perfecti state that Abigael is chaotic and will be placed in the Tomb permanently, and by association, Jordan will as well.  The sisters argue with the Perfecti, telling them that they are blind to context and lack humanity, and that is chaos. When the Perfecti try to send Abigael and Jordan back to the Tomb, the sisters use the Power of Three to stop them, which results in the Lady Justitia statue being destroyed and the Perfecti disappearing.

Afterwards, Mel has a drink with Abigael and apologises to her for calling her irredeemable. Maggie goes to see Jordan and he tells her that he’s going to Colorado for a while to spend time with family as he needs to get away from magic.

The episode ends with the Perfecti returning to the Command Centre to collect the tablet, vowing to destroy the Charmed Ones, just like they did in the past, and returning to the Tomb.

Overall I didn’t feel that this was the best episode. While we had Abigael and Jordan being set free, and the trial did provide good insight into Abigael’s character, I felt that the trial did drag out for too long. I also felt that the Perfecti turning against the sisters wasn’t a surprise as they always seemed too good to be true, that being said the revelation that they have destroyed previous Charmed Ones was a surprise.

It will be interesting to see what happens next now that the Perfecti have officially turned against the Charmed Ones, or at least the current incarnation.
