Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 11 (Witchful Thinking)

This episode had the sisters learn to be careful what you wish for.

The episode kicks off with the sisters in the Anatolia Caves in Turkey, wearing gas masks, in a search of a relic. In a flashback, the Perfecti tell the sisters that the mist that comes from the creature who guards the relic is a security system that protects the relic from interlopers. They also tell the sisters that the relic is full of immense power to give them what they seek.

They also tell the sisters that the allergy was another security system, the sisters then figure out that combining the Source with the Sacred Tree blew a hole in the Tomb of Chaos, which set off the allergy security system, which is designed to repel magical creatures from each other like magnets. Maggie asks the Perfecti why they can’t reverse the allergy when they created it, Aladria tells her it wasn’t meant to be reversed as they assumed that anyone that tried to break in would be a mortal enemy. Maggie asks how they were supposed to know about this as they weren’t provided with instructions, Mo argues they did provide instructions with the tablet, but Maggie points out that the tablet is in a language that only the Perfecti can read.

The sisters find the relic, a magical egg, in the hands of the creature, which is now a skeleton. Macy manages to switch out the egg with her gas mask. They see mist come from the creature’s skeleton and they leave.

We then cut to Abigael waking up to find her apartment trashed and deep scratches in her arm, and Maggie at an appointment with her therapist. The therapist is then frozen by Macy via a potion, Macy informs her that the egg is ready and they leave. At the Command Centre, the sisters cast a spell, and a magical blast comes from the egg, throwing them to the ground. When Maggie is the first to come to, and helps Macy and Mel up, they realise their allergy is finally cured.

The sisters are then shown happily living their lives. Harry has cooked breakfast for them all, with Macy revealing she has a meeting with Gloria about the non-profit legal clinic, Maggie has an interview with Dr. Lawrence for the research internship, and Mel has a meeting with the new Dean about possibly getting tenure. When they hear clattering upstairs, they remember that Josefina has been up in the attic studying for days, when Mel goes to check up on her, she encourages her to consider her future plans. Josefina dismisses her, but does tell her she needs her help in getting a rare book on Taino translation from the College.

Later, Macy returns to the Command Centre, revealing that her meeting actually went well as the non-profit legal clinic is providing good PR for the Shea Group. She and Harry then leave for a romantic getaway in Paris. Meanwhile, Mel runs into the new Dean, who tells her that she saw her viral speech and gives her tenure, and despite her meeting with Dr. Lawrence being bumpy, Maggie ultimately gets the internship. Meanwhile, Abigael storms into the Manor in her demonic form, looking for the sisters. An invisible force knocks Abigael into a wall and she reverts back to her human form.

Later, Mel and Harry go to their hotel to find that they’ve been upgraded to the honeymoon suite, only to discover that an older couple, Frank and Viola, actually booked it months ago, and give it back to them, only for Frank to have a heart attack hours later. Meanwhile Mel discovers her senior colleagues are hostile towards her and Maggie discovers that Antonio was in a car accident and may not survive. This leads to the sisters discovering that while the egg has cured them of their allergy and given them everything they’ve wished for, it’s come at the cost of others. This leads to them returning the egg and their allergy returning.

Meanwhile, Josefina manages to get the book she needs and casts a spell which activates her powers. When the sisters believe that the egg gave Josefina her powers, Josefina uses her powers to bind them as she doesn’t want to give them up, but she lets them go when Mel tells her that being a witch is about making the world a better place, not about their powers. They later realise that Josefina just needed to claim her powers and the egg had nothing to do with it. Josefina tells them that she’s going back to Puerto Rico to go to college. Before she leaves, she gives them what appears to be a completed or at least expanded Book of Shadows.

Meanwhile Abigael asks Jordan for his help in binding her powers as only a human can cast the binding spell. When Jordan tries to treat her wounds, a symbol is burned in the back of her neck and a breeze comes through her apartment. Abigael disappears and Jordan arms himself with her dagger, asking an unseen being who they are. It’s later revealed at the end of the episode that both Jordan and Abigael are in the Tomb of Chaos.

Overall I felt that this episode was definitely an improvement over the previous one, however this episode had its issues as well. For one thing, I found it odd that the origins of the allergy were explained via flashback, when it really should have been explained in the previous episode, as it would have provided much needed context for its final moment. On smaller notes, I also found it odd that a spell to bind a witch’s powers had to be cast by a human, especially since previous attempts to bind either a witch’s or a demon’s powers have been cast by witches or demons themselves. I also found it odd that Mel was surprised by the Book of Shadows’ appearance, as she was the one who showed it to Josefina in the previous episode. I felt that the sisters’ allergy being cured and getting everything they wanted was too easy, so the outcome in this episode was predictable.

However the episode did have some fine moments, I appreciated the sisters finally experiencing some happiness. The mortality issue in Harry and Macy’s relationship presented itself again and I was ultimately not surprised by Harry proposing that he become mortal, but whether he does this remains to be seen. While I wasn’t surprised that Abigael and Jordan were placed in the Tomb of Chaos, it will be interesting to find out from the Perfecti why Jordan was placed there and whether it was deliberate or a mistake. I was surprised to see Josefina leave, I thought she would play a bigger role in the series, but maybe she will in the future.

I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next, especially with Jordan and Abigael now in the Tomb of Chaos.

Stray Observations:

-Much like their fascination with fast food in the previous episode, Aladria and Mo are fascinated by the internet. Mo believes it looks like a giant spider’s lair.

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “Sometimes the other shoe doesn’t drop, sometimes it just fits.” (Mel to Maggie)
  • “Tomorrow, a little trip to the Pasteur Museum.” “Where the original rabies vaccine flask is? Harry Greenwood, you sure know the way to this girl’s heart.” (Harry-Macy while in Paris)
