Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 10 (Bruja-Ha)

This episode finally reveals who built the Tomb of Chaos and why.

The episode kicks off revealing that six days have passed since the events of the previous episode. Macy is seen running away from someone or something, armed with a dagger and a potion. We then hear a creature growling, which is revealed to be worm-like. Just as Macy is about to vanquish it, an innocent comes outside, on the phone. The creature makes it way to kill the innocent, but Macy vanquishes it, only for the innocent to make a sexist remark towards her.

When Macy returns to the Command Centre, it’s revealed that the sisters have now put the map in “active rift” mode. The creature Macy vanquished is the 183rd, and the sisters are exhausted from their rotating shifts in vanquishing the creatures that have been unleashed from the Tomb of Chaos. When another rift opens in Germany, Macy wakes Maggie up for her to attend to it. Maggie tells her about the psych paper she has due and if she doesn’t get an ‘A’ she can kiss her internship goodbye, she asks Macy to give her a minute alone. Macy returns to tell Harry that Maggie seems exhausted, only for a perky Maggie to come in and leave via the portal, forgetting to take a marble with her.

Meanwhile at Safe Space, Mel is having a coffee when Josefina comes to see her. Josefina gives her a rope, which is actually a Bruja’s ladder – a mash up of traditional Brujeria with knot magic she read about in the Book of Elders. Josefina wants to pitch in and help the sisters out, but Mel is refusing to let her help, telling her she’s not ready.

Back at the Command Centre, Harry tries to heal Macy’s injured shoulder but the allergy makes things worse. Macy goes back to the Manor, not noticing the goo from the worm creature dripping from her dagger, on her way out. When she tries to treat the wound herself, she collapses. Meanwhile, Maggie eventually finds the creature she is looking for in Germany, who looks exactly like her, and Mel has to deal with another rift opening in Chile.

When Mel arrives at a pier in Chile, she asks a lone person if they have seen anything or anyone unusual, but this person turns out to be another creature. Mel vanquishes the creature, only to see two bright lights hovering in the sky. The lights turn into two people in robes, who don’t speak but start to hum and walk towards her. Mel uses her marble to return to the Command Centre, but the portal doesn’t close behind her. The two beings walk through and towards Mel and Harry. They touch Harry on the head, performing what looks like a demon mind meld, which renders him unconscious. Mel ends up using Josefina’s Bruja ladder to bind them.

Mel uses a potion to try and wake Harry up, but he grabs her arm just as she goes to pour it. Harry concludes that if he can make physical contact with her without causing an allergic reaction, the two beings not only took his powers but made him mortal. Josefina suggests to Mel that they find a way to communicate with the two beings and make some kind of deal to get her powers so she can pitch in, pointing out that the sisters are clearly in need of help. When Josefina mentions her sisters, Mel questions where they are, and finds distress alerts from them on the map. Harry goes to help Macy, while Mel goes to Germany to find Maggie and asks Josefina to guard the two beings. All of them are unaware that the worm creature has managed to reincarnate itself and is crawling around the Command Centre.

When Harry finds Macy on the floor, he uses a potion from Mel’s potion stash to heal her as he can’t do it himself. This works and they finally manage to hug and spend time together. Macy admits to him that she’s feels like she’s fighting all the time in the magical and real world, and she questions why she keeps fighting to save a world that refuses to fight for people like her. Harry tells her that is never going to stop fighting for her and them. Meanwhile after Mel and Maggie fight off the doppelganger demon, they both admit to their exhaustion and the toll it’s taking on their lives. Meanwhile Josefina tries to communicate with the two beings by humming at and with them, when she believes she’s having a breakthrough with them after their humming activates the tablet, she unbinds them, only for them to perform the mind meld on her.

When Harry, Macy, Mel and Maggie return to the Command Centre, they find Josefina unconscious on the floor and multiple people unconscious at Safe Space, before witnessing the two beings performing another mind meld on someone else. When Josefina comes to, she tells them that she saw inside their minds and they’re not trying to hurt them, and they communicate through touch.

When the two beings see the worm creature coming towards them, they open the rift and send the creature through. It is then revealed that they can speak and their names are Aladria and Mo, and they built the Tomb of Chaos, which is actually known as the Benevolent Classification and Containment System for Rampageous Beings and Unpredictable Objects in Fifth-Dimensional Space-Time. They also give Harry his powers back and apologise for borrowing them without his consent.

They all go back to the Command Centre, where Aladria and Mo explain that they are the Perfecti and are here to help to them. They tell Harry, the sisters and Josefina that the magical world was in chaos, with power in all its form going around completely unchecked. Desperate for a sense of order, many tribes of magic gave up some of their powers to create the Perfecti. They restored order by rounding up creatures in chaos and placing them in the Containment System. They both placed themselves in the Containment System and rested, until seven days ago when the sisters read from the tablet. Mo tells them that they should have read from the tablet months ago, and that the world is teetering on the brink of collapse with the creatures running around, however they can help them, if they want. The sisters eagerly accept their help, and Aladria and Mo also reveal that they can cure their magical allergy.

Towards the end of the episode, Maggie manages to get back on top of her studies and makes an appointment with a counsellor to deal with her anxiety and self-doubt. Harry orbs into the kitchen where Macy is baking, and they talk about their fears regarding their age difference and mortality, with Harry possibly contemplating becoming mortal, however they decide to postpone a deep chat about this to another day. Mel shows Josefina her recreation of the Book of Shadows, (which looks like the Book from the original series) and adds her Bruja ladder to it. Mel commends her on the Bruja ladder and offers to keep working on the Book with her. Mel tells her that she believes their luck is finally about to change.

The episode ends with the sisters leaving via the portal in the Command Centre on a mysterious trip to an unknown destination to cure themselves of their magical allergy.

Overall I felt that this wasn’t the best episode. While I’m happy that the origins of the Tomb of Chaos – who created it and why – were finally revealed, I felt that the Perfecti were too good to be true. I get the feeling that their willingness to help both with the containment of the creatures and curing their magical allergy was too easy. In all honesty, considering how adamant Mel was in telling Josefina she wasn’t ready for witchcraft, and all the other things that the sisters have been through over the course of this and the previous season, I’m surprised that they trusted the Perfecti so quickly and easily. Time will tell whether they made the right choice or the biggest mistake of their lives.

On smaller notes, I felt that Josefina being told to Guard the Perfecti and not cast any spells, only to do so anyway to be cliché, and I did find myself wondering why the sisters wouldn’t just cast some sort of communication spell on them to be able to communicate with them, this would have saved a lot of time.

I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next, whether the sisters really do manage to cure their allergy, and whether the Perfecti really are magical friends or magical foes.

Stray Observations:

-Aladria and Mo eat a lot of fast food as they haven’t eaten in 21,342 years and six days.

-Jordan and Abigael didn’t appear in this episode.

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “So, a meat product named for the Germans and a potato product named for the French somehow constitutes a quintessentially American meal?” (Aladria to Mel on hamburgers and fries)
