Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 9 (No Hablo Brujeria)

This episode introduces us to a new family member, Jordan’s curse finally breaking and other revelations come to light.

The episode kicks off with Harry and Macy working on translating the tablet. Macy has managed to translate the Latin part of the tablet – “this tablet is forged with magic for those who are perfect to move time and space”.  Harry keeps pushing Macy to talk about her interaction with the Shea Group Board days earlier, but Macy refuses to talk about it. When Harry realises that another passage on the tablet is written in an ancient demonic language that needs to be translated, he goes to see Abigael to ask for her help, much to Macy’s irritation.

After Harry leaves, Macy hears the doorbell ring, Jordan has arrived as Maggie offered to help him with Tulipe research. When Jordan gets too close to her and accidentally triggers her magical allergy, Macy snaps and tells him to be more careful. He asks her if she’s okay, she tells him that she’s sick of everyone asking her this. They then hear glass break, and find a window broken and the back door open. A hooded figure then casts a spell on them and Jordan instinctually steps in front of Macy to protect her.

We cut to Maggie and Mel coming home, telling each other about their days. Maggie attended a psych clinic with Dr. Lawrence where Antonio outshone her, and Mel has been asked to give a keynote speech at an intersectionality conference, but admits to experiencing imposter syndrome. Maggie notices that Jordan is not around, which is weird as he said he was going to meet her, Mel notices that someone has been in the house and hears noises upstairs. Mel and Maggie go to the attic and see the hooded figure tossing books on the floor. The hooded figure is revealed to be Josefina Rayes, their second cousin on their mother’s side and fellow witch. When Maggie asks why they’ve never heard of her, Josefina reveals that she’s transgender and they probably knew her by her birth name. Josefina also tells them that Marisol abandoned her family and stole the Book of Shadows from them.

Meanwhile Macy and Jordan find themselves in an alternate reality based on Jordan’s subconscious, as he was hit with the magic from Josefina’s spell. They find themselves in Jordan’s high school. Jordan reveals that he used to be bullied before he had his growth spurt and that he dated a girl, Trisha, who was awful and manipulative. When Macy finds some lockers glimmering, she finds two keyholes that could lead to them getting out of there. Jordan finds one of the keys around Trisha’s neck. He manages to convince her to hand over the key willingly, and she tells him that a man in weird clothes had the second key around his neck. Macy tells him that the spell is rudimentary but not stable, which is why they can feel the temperature around them increasing.

Back at the Manor, Josefina reveals to the sisters that she cast a Brujeria spell on Macy and Jordan, which is containing them inside her bag, and that either they can get themselves out or she can let them out. When Mel and Maggie agree to show Josefina the recreations of the Book of Shadows that Mel has made, if she lets Macy and Jordan out. She agrees, however the bag that they’re in has become too hot for her to touch. Josefina also reveals to the sisters that while her family were okay with her transitioning, they weren’t okay with her being a witch, as they believe only biological women can be witches, and they’ve kicked her out. When Josefina leaves to get ice to keep the bag cool, Maggie points out to Mel that Marisol kept a lot of secrets from them, especially as she never taught them about witchcraft or her side of the family.

Meanwhile Harry goes to see Abigael, she tells him she can’t translate the passage on the tablet but an exiled demon known as Fenric the Vile can, although she warns Harry that he is notorious for being violent. Abigael goes with him offering to help, in an attempt to redeem herself.

When Harry and Abigael go to Fenric’s house, they find that he is actually calm and welcoming. Fenric knows Abigael is the Overlord and performs a mind meld on her and Harry without warning, to figure out their true intentions. Angered that he performed the mind meld without her consent, Abigael turns into her demon form and attacks him, but he isn’t frightened as killing him is illogical as it would mean they wouldn’t get the translation they need. Abigael lets him go and he goes into another room to start translating. Abigael then starts going through his house, telling Harry that something is not right about Fenric as no demon can control themselves purely through meditation and relaxation. She eventually finds a box under a floorboard, which contains an amulet. When Abigael touches it, a blast of energy hits her and Harry, replacing their emotions with pure logic.

Meanwhile, Josefina, Mel and Maggie go to the Command Centre where they combine the Brujeria with western magic to cast “walls of steel” on the bag to prevent it from destroying itself completely. Macy and Jordan make their way through Jordan’s memories in Afghanistan. They then see Lawrence Chase walk past them and through a set of doors, revealing he is the man with the second key. Macy and Jordan walk through the doors and back into the school. They make their way to an empty auditorium, where Macy calls Jordan out on his fear of getting angry and confronting people. Jordan yells back that he has been cursed with a burden he doesn’t deserve and feels that he can’t get angry, which leads to him alluding to Macy’s experience with the Shea Group Board.

The auditorium stage then lights up, replaying the moment that Florence cursed Jordan’s family. Jordan confronts Lawrence and manages to get the key. He condemns Lawrence for his actions but also calls out Florence on her own actions in cursing his family, and that he can’t change the past. Jordan tells her he’ll balance the scales of justice by changing the future.

Back at Fenric’s house, under the influence of the amulet, Harry admits to Abigael that he is desperate to understand what Macy is going through, and Abigael counters that he is desperate to find a solution to the allergy so he at least found the solution to something. When Fenric sees them under the influence of the amulet, he decides to use this to his advantage and have Harry kill Abigael so he can become the Overlord. Harry ultimately decides to let Abigael live as Fenric could possibly unite the demons to do worse things then Abigael would, even though Abigael points out it would be best for them both if she were killed. Harry and Abigael take the translation and leave Fenric in exile. When Harry takes Abigael back to her apartment, he tells her that there are no shortcuts to redemption, echoing Jordan’s sentiments in the previous episode.

Towards the end of the episode, Macy and Jordan talk about their shared experiences at being on the receiving end of racist microaggressions, and declare that they’re friends. They also discover that Florence released Jordan from his curse. Meanwhile Mel and Maggie convince Josefina to stay with them and learn more about magic. Macy finds Harry in the attic and he apologises for pushing her to talk about her experience with the Shea Group Board, and acknowledges that he’ll never understand what she goes through. She accepts his apology.

The episode ends with Macy and Harry saying both the Latin and demonic translations of the tablet aloud, and discovering alongside Mel, Maggie and Josefina that it’s raining scorpions outside and they’ve unleashed chaos.

Overall I felt that this was a good but not great episode. We had progression with the tablet subplot with its translations and unleashing of chaos. We met a new relative in Josefina who brought a new twist to the matriarchal nature of witchcraft that is present both in this series and its predecessor, with the reveal that whilst her family was fine with her transition, they weren’t fine with her being a witch as they felt the craft belongs to biological women (I also appreciate that they cast Mareya Salazar, a transgender actress to portray Josefina). We also had Jordan’s curse subplot come to a close in a satisfying manner.

It will be interesting to see what happens next now that Jordan’s curse has come to an end, and what Harry and the sisters will do about the chaos they’ve unleashed, and what it means.
