The Good Place – Season 4, Episode 10 (You’ve Changed Man)
This episode finally has the group coming up with the solution to the points system problem.
The episode kicks off with The Judge and Janet inside a Neutral Janet’s void to find the reset button. Janet argues that if she cancels Earth, she would be erasing a lot of human accomplishment such as the works of William Shakespeare, the Pyramids, and Timothy Olyphant. The Judge uses the computer in Neutral Janet’s void to look for the reset button and doesn’t find it, she and Janet return to chambers, and she marbleises the Neutral Janet.
In the meantime the group, lead by Chidi, try to come up with a new plan to save Earth, and fix the problem with the points system and afterlife. They come up with the idea to put every human (with the exception of outstanding outliers on either side) in the Medium Place. While the Good Place Committee blindly agrees, Shawn rejects the proposal. Meanwhile, The Judge and Janet are in the void of a Bad Janet, where Janet points out that human evolution could go wrong the second time around and humans could get worse instead of better.
Michael then tells the group that if they’re going to lose, they’re going to lose on their own terms, and tells them they need to come up with a completely new plan for the afterlife. When The Judge searches Janet’s void, Janet lures her into a meeting with the group, conjuring up Timothy Olyphant to convince her to hear them out. The Judge agrees to stay and brings Shawn into the meeting.
The group propose that instead of life on Earth being a test that humans pass or fail, it will be a class they take and the afterlife will become their test. Humans will be subjected to personalised tests of moral development and will be rebooted and do the test repeatedly until they ace it. They will have an evaluation session after each test, retaining a vague memory of the session, so they can keep learning each time. As a Good Place and Bad Place architect will work together to design the test and the demons will be play roles in the tests, they won’t be out of a job. Despite this and The Judge being on board, Shawn also rejects this proposal.
Later, Michael goes to see Shawn in the neighbourhood. Michael tells Shawn he has won and says his goodbyes to him. Whilst Shawn tries to gloat, he admits that their ongoing battle was the best fun he’s ever had. Michael also points out to Shawn that he wouldn’t have let him try the original experiment if the system was working properly.
Shawn, Michael and the group return to chambers, with Shawn informing The Judge that he is accepting the proposal. The Judge abandons her plan to reset Earth and asks them what is the first thing they need to do to put the new system in action. Everyone looks at Chidi and he tells them that he’s just the ‘idea guy’.
Overall I felt that this was a solid episode as the points system and overall afterlife problem has finally been solved. I also enjoyed the scenes of The Judge and Janet going into the voids of a Neutral Janet, Bad Janet and Disco Janet. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Stray Observations:
Running gag: Eleanor and Chidi turned on by discussing philosophy and confidence, respectively.
-The Judge is now watching season 3 of Justified.
-Chidi saw the time-knife again, this time he wasn’t so impressed.
-Disco Janet gave Chidi roller skates.
-Jason once went to jail for a week for stealing the wiener mobile.
-The search results window on the computer in Bad Janet’s void says “0 results found. Way to go, Numbnuts.”
-According to Jason, a Jacksonville plea bargain involves hooking up with the judge to get out of trouble.
Best one liners and interactions:
- “Who’s next?” “Your dad’s pimply butt, you fat dink.” “That is so interesting, because last time I checked, I didn’t have a dad. That’s why I’m attracted to all the father figures on the TV shows I watch, m’kay?” (The Judge-Bad Janet-The Judge)
