Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 5 (Yew Do You)
This episode was the perfect follow up to the previous one.
The episode kicks off with a couple stopping at a petrol station. The young woman, Julie, asks her boyfriend, Jason, to get her a snack and she waits in the car. A man knocks on her window and she rolls it down. The man says the words ‘Mepte Ama’ to her repeatedly while magical red energy flows from his mouth and washes over her. Moments later, Jason returns and finds the car is not where he left it. Moments later, he finds it further down the road, with Julie in the driver’s seat and she runs over him without hesitation.
We then cut to a montage alternating between scenes of Maggie taking a dance class, studying and struggling to come up with a research topic for her class with Dr. Lawrence. Meanwhile Harry and Macy are in the attic conducting further research on the tablet. Harry tells Macy that he scoured the web for prehistoric drawings and found one that resembles the creature they battled in the previous episode, which was traced to the Kvikindi Ruins in Norway. They then hear Mel shouting from downstairs.
Harry, Macy and Maggie rush into the kitchen to find Mel in disbelief over a video she is watching online. The video is of Julie running Jason over and Julie repeating the words ‘Mepte Ama’. Before they can talk about it further, they hear a knock on the door. Macy answers it to find Gloria Lee, an attorney on behalf of the Shea Group. Gloria hands Macy an envelope and informs her that she has inherited Safe Space.
Macy and Mel walk through Safe Space discussing the situation. Mel points out the positive aspect that they now have permanent access to the Command Centre. Swan then comes up to Macy and congratulates her, and then informs her she has a long to-do list to deal with. Macy tells Swan to text her the details. When Macy catches up with Mel after finishing up with Swan, Mel tells her that the Dean wants to meet with her.
Meanwhile Jordan comes to see Harry at the Manor as he is going to accompany him to Norway. When Harry sees a tie around Jordan’s neck, he jokes that he’s overdressed for their trip. Jordan asks for his help in doing a Windsor knot to wear with his suit to a cocktail party with his law firm’s partners. Harry warns Jordan of the risks of the trip, Jordan tells Harry he accepts them, and Harry orbs them to Norway.
Mel goes to see the Dean, who tells her that she can’t prescribe Overcoming the Boundaries of Gender as it’s not part of the syllabus. Mel counters that she gave her students the book as extra credit and therefore is not part of the syllabus, and that her students are passionate about the text and their behaviour has changed as a result. The Dean commends her on her passion, much like she did in the previous episode, and suggests pushing through another book on the issue, Transgender Studies: A Primer, which she wrote herself.
Meanwhile Maggie is also on campus, struggling to figure out her research topic when Antonio comes up to her. He asks her if she has figured out her research topic and she tells him she has some ideas, and asks about his topic. He tells her his topic will focus on IGD – Intergroup dialogue between diverse populations of students, how small group interventions can bring about social awareness of social systems and promote social justice. Maggie compliments him on his idea, telling him that it sounds amazing. Maggie sees more viral videos of people hurting their loved ones. When Maggie shows Mel the videos, Mel realises that they are repeating the same phrase, ‘Mepte Ama’.
Maggie and Mel go to the Command Centre and show the videos to Macy. Macy tells them she’s seen those words before, and eventually finds them in the Book of Elders. Macy says that ‘Ama’ translate from early Latin to ‘love’. Maggie has also found a video posted online by a conspiracy theorist who has mapped out the events. Macy says that if they want to figure this out, they need to find Julie as it started with her. Mel gets a message telling her that she needs to attend to her office hours, so Macy and Maggie go the petrol station where Jason was run over to find Julie.
Meanwhile in Norway whilst they are searching for the symbols at the Kvikindi Ruins, Jordan makes a remark about Harry’s expertise on ‘ancient stuff’, which Harry takes as an insult about his age. Jordan calls him out on his crankiness and Harry confides in him that he never considered the age difference between him and Macy before, but lately he has been constantly reminded of it. Jordan tells him that eventually Macy will catch up to and even surpass him in age. Jordan confides in Harry that he’s trying to fit in at his law firm, Harry tells him to be himself but Jordan reminds him it’s not so easy due to his background and ethnicity. They find one of the symbols, however before they can dig deeper, Harry accidentally steps on a booby trap that sends darts flying at them (one of them hitting Harry in the arm) and he has to orb him and Jordan out of there.
Macy and Mel go to the petrol station and Maggie gets a premonition from the broken glass on the ground that Julie is in a nearby forest. Meanwhile, Mel looks at Transgender Studies: A Primer and notices that it was written in 2013 and is therefore outdated. Kevin comes to see her and thanks her for what she’s done for him, revealing that Dylan has apologised to him for his behaviour. Mel remarks that it’s amazing but Kevin counters it’s the bare minimum but progress.
Whilst they are looking for Julie, Maggie confides in Macy that she is having trouble choosing a research topic as she wants to research a topic she can relate to but can’t find anything that resonates with her. Maggie then finds a symbol and the letters ‘O-M-O-N’ engraved on a tree, and Julie’s wallet on the ground. Maggie and Macy hear Julie and eventually find her laying against a tree, still in a trance. When they hear people looking for her, they take her back to the Command Centre.
When they get back, Macy and Maggie come to the conclusion that someone else is controlling Julie. Macy has to leave to sign papers for Safe Space and when Maggie accidentally plays her study mix on her phone, Julie starts swaying to the music. When Maggie starts swaying and moving along with her, and Julie mimics her movements, Maggie tells Mel that there have been studies showing that catatonic people respond to music. Maggie eventually combines her movements with her emotional inception power and snaps Julie out of her trance, which the demon is immediately alerted to. Meanwhile Swan tells Macy that if she can’t take on the work required to keep Safe Space running, that she should hand it over to someone who will.
When Julie asks where she is and who the sisters are, they cover by telling her they’re archaeologists that study supernatural anomalies and the Command Centre is their office. Julie tells them that the demon, Omon, kept telling her to prove her love to him by offering a sacrifice, which is why she hit Jason with her car. Maggie tells her that Jason is in the hospital in a stable condition. Meanwhile after Jordan treats Harry’s wound at the Manor, Macy calls Harry for help. Harry tells them that Omon is a mythological creature that predates civilisation, no such creature has ever been seen or heard from, which means the Book of Elders can’t help them. He tells them that this myth was the basis of the myth of Narcissus. Mel suggests they vanquish Omon the same way you would vanquish Narcissus, and makes a potion with yew in it, as yew was used to defeat Narcissus. Meanwhile Omon makes his way to Safe Space and chases after Maggie and Julie, Maggie takes her to the roof and alerts Harry.
Harry, Mel and Macy make their way to the roof but Omon manages to hypnotise Macy. Under the trance, Macy uses her powers against Mel and Maggie, nearly killing them, but Macy manages to break the trance by listening to Mel and Maggie reminding her who she is. Mel tells Macy to throw her the potion puddle, which Mel turns into a mirror. Like Narcissus, Omon looking into his own reflection is his downfall, sinking into the potion. Before the potion fades away, an ancient symbol appears similar to the one the creature left behind in the previous episode, which means the creatures are related to each other.
Towards the end of the episode, Maggie finds her research topic ‘The Effectiveness of Movement Therapy in the Treatment of Adults Suffering From Trauma’, while Mel makes her point with the Dean that she doesn’t want to teach her book to her class, without insulting her work. Macy also manages to smooth things over with Swan, and Jordan decides not to wear the tie to the cocktail party.
The episode ends with Harry and Macy discussing the creatures, with Macy asking where they came from, Harry tells her that’s the trillion dollar question.
Overall I felt that this was another solid episode that perfectly balanced the sisters’ magical and personal lives, and a good follow up to the previous episode. I enjoyed seeing Harry and Jordan pair off and help each other out with their respective issues. I also appreciated Swan standing up to Macy and for Safe Space, showing that she is more than a one-dimensional millennial stereotype. I also appreciated the progression of the ancient magic story arc.
