Charmed (Reboot) – Season 3, Episode 4 (You Can’t Touch This)

This episode had the sisters deal with human problems as well as magical.

The episode kicks off with Mel and Maggie getting ready for the day, with the reveal of their new hairstyles and the fact that three months have passed since the events of the previous episode. Macy returns from her morning run and they all keep their distance from each other. However Harry orbs in and sends them flying as he’s too physically close to them.

It’s revealed that Harry has been all over the world trying to find rare ingredients and has come back with a moon poppy this time. Macy reveals to Harry that combining the Source and the Sacred Tree sent a pulse through their bodies, and like a nuclear blast it left behind trace elements in their blood and is giving off a signal, which is shown when Macy puts the map into an infectious spotting mode. Macy believes this is the cause of the blast, and the hives and burns they experience after attempting close contact. Macy finishes her potion and drinks it, she and Harry test whether it has worked, and it’s later revealed when they storm into the Manor that it was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile Mel and Maggie make their way to Seattle State College, revealing that they are back at College as a professor and psychology student respectively. Maggie expresses her frustration to Mel that she thought once the Faction was gone that their lives would go back to normal. Mel counters that at least the Manor and their identities are now uncloaked. When Maggie sees Jordan from a distance, she turns around, avoiding him as the blast not only affects them but also Jordan and Ruby.

Maggie goes to see one of her professors, Dr. Lawrence, about applying for a research internship. To her chagrin, he mistakes her for his assistant and even when she corrects him, he still expects her to get him his coffee, and bonds with a male student, Antonio, who went to the same college he attended.

Meanwhile, Mel is teaching her class, focusing on marginalisation and one of her students, Kevin points out that activism is a common way to combat it. When Mel praises his statement, two boys behind him, Dylan and Trey, make fun of him by making a transphobic comment, revealing that Kevin is transgender. After the class ends, Mel asks Kevin about Dylan’s comments, and Kevin reveals that Dylan is his dorm mate and he constantly makes these remarks. Mel offers to speak to the Dean to have the book, Overcoming the Boundaries of Gender, added to the syllabus. Meanwhile, Harry runs into Jordan at Safe Space. Jordan is currently doing a law firm clerkship and asks Harry to say hi to Maggie for him, knowing that she is avoiding him.

Later that evening, Mel is sitting on the sofa reading through Overcoming the Boundaries of Gender when Harry, Macy and Maggie storm into the Manor, angry over how their respective days panned out, leaving the front door open. When Mel goes to close the door, she is possessed by an invisible being. Later that night, she wakes up, her eyes yellowed. Whilst possessed, she goes to a cemetery and starts digging up a grave.

The next morning, Mel walks into the kitchen, unaware she was possessed. Maggie tells her about her experiences with Dr. Lawrence the previous day. Mel tells her she should have stood up for herself but Maggie counters that society doesn’t allow her to do so. Maggie tells her that she is going to try and win Dr. Lawrence over with her brilliance. On her way out, Maggie tells Mel that she missed her mud mask. Confused by her comments, Mel takes out her compact mirror and looks at the mud on her neck. Meanwhile Harry brings Macy breakfast in bed, but she’s not in the mood for it as she doesn’t want him to try and make everything seem normal.

Later, Mel meets with the Dean, Rebecca Eldon, she asks that Overcoming the Boundaries of Gender to be added to the syllabus. While Rebecca praises her teaching skills, she politely refuses Mel’s suggestion as the syllabus has already been approved for the year, but does suggest she apply for it to be added to next year’s syllabus. Meanwhile, Maggie manages to impress Dr. Lawrence with her thoughts and questions on emotional intimacy, only to snap at Antonio for constantly interrupting her. When Dr. Lawrence calls her out on her behaviour but not Antonio’s, she has a panic attack and leaves. She goes into the library and tries to calm herself down using the technique Jordan taught her, and the invisible creature possesses her.

Macy scrapes parts of her hives off her arm and casts the revelation spell on it at Harry’s suggestion. Macy casts the spell multiple times and it doesn’t seem to work, which leads to her leaving the Command Centre upset and asking Harry for space. Moments later, the spell takes effect, blasting a hole through a wall where Harry finds a stone with ancient symbols on it. Later that evening, a possessed Maggie is seen emptying a bag of empty bones at the Command Centre.

The next morning, an unaware Maggie finds a stick in her hair and Harry in the kitchen. Harry confides in Maggie about his concerns for Macy, she tells him that emotional intimacy is just as important as physical intimacy and they should work on it. Meanwhile Mel runs into Kevin and tells him that she tried talking to the Dean about the book but didn’t succeed in getting added to the syllabus, she also asks him about his dorm room situation, as she did manage to convince the Dean to get him a private dorm room. Kevin shows his appreciation, but he prefers to live with Dylan as it forces Dylan to see him as he is and it’s his form of protesting.

Meanwhile Macy is boxing her frustrations away at Jordan’s gym, when she hears her phone go off, she finds missed calls and text messages from Harry. The invisible creature is watching her and possesses her.

Later, when Mel and Maggie talk about their trouble sleeping because of the dreams they’ve been having, they realise they’ve been having the same dream. When they question if it really was a dream, Harry comes to see them asking if they’ve seen Macy. In the Command Centre, a possessed Macy is casting a spell over the bones, using her own blood, bringing it to life. Harry tries to wake her up with no success. When Mel and Maggie make their way to the Command Centre, they find Macy lying on the floor. Macy wakes up and says she doesn’t remember what happened but discovers she was near the Book of Elders. Maggie finds that the book was open to a body restoration spell that needed the Charmed Ones to cast. Macy guesses that if her blood was used for the spell, then the creature would be infected and she finds it on the map.

The sisters find Harry in a forest, unconscious and badly injured. Macy uses the moon poppy potion on him, whilst Mel and Maggie try to find the creature. Harry is saved by the potion and the sisters vanquish the creature. They find that the energy of the creature formed a glowing pattern on the ground, with a symbol inside. The symbol is one of the symbols on the rock Harry found. They discover that the creature and the symbols are over 10,000 years old, older than human civilisation, which is why they are unable to find a cure.

Towards the end of the episode, the sisters comment on how they defeated a creature older than human civilisation but they can’t defeat the societal obstacles they’re currently dealing with. This inspires Mel to prescribe Overcoming the Boundaries of Gender as a reading for her class, with Dylan pointing out it’s not in the syllabus and Mel telling him it is now. Maggie gives Dr. Lawrence a book on toxic masculinity, recommending it for next year’s syllabus and tells him she will be applying for the research internship. Macy has a Parisian themed romantic dinner with Harry in the backyard.

The episode ends with a portal opening in a forest, a mysterious creature coming out of it and the portal closing behind it.

Overall, I felt that this was a solid episode, especially with the focus on the sisters’ human side and lives. This is the first episode of the season, actually the first episode in a while, that has focused on the sisters as human beings, as well as witches. It was a nice change of pace from the Faction story arc. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next, and finding out who the mysterious creature is that came out of the portal.
