Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 18 (Don’t Look Back in Anger)

This episode is all about memories and secrets.

The episode kicks off with the sisters trying to remind Harry who is to no avail. Harry only knows himself as James Westwell. When Macy tells him lives are at stake and that he must remember something, Harry tells her that he heard the Faction say a phrase that stuck in his mind, the Forty Stone Parasite. The sisters cast a containment spell on Harry, while Macy decides to make a lost memory balm to use on Harry, and Mel and Maggie try to figure out what else the Faction is up to.

Mel suggests to Maggie that Ray may be able to help them as he has been feeding her information about the Faction. Maggie is annoyed by this revelation, and suddenly starts to feel like she is dying and her skin is burning. Mel thinks she may have been poisoned by a magical neurotoxin. Maggie rests while Mel picks up Ray from Cancun.

Meanwhile, Harry tries to break through his containment to no avail whilst Macy makes the lost memory balm. Macy keeps trying to remind Harry of who is he and tells him they work well together as a team. When Macy releases Harry from containment and places the memory balm on his forehead, and casts the accompanying spell, she is thrown across the room and lands on the floor. She is knocked unconscious and experiences a memory of accidentally throwing fire at a classmate who sexually harassed her at a karaoke bar.

Macy tells her father, Dexter, what happened and while he tells her that she just drank too much, when she wakes up, she hears Dexter on the phone to someone saying that what they thought would happen to her finally happened. Meanwhile, Harry becomes concerned about Macy, but takes his wallet and makes a run for it. As he’s leaving, he finds a picture of him and Macy in his wallet, as well as pictures with him and the sisters on the Manor’s walls and goes back. He finds Macy convulsing and her phone starts to ring. Jordan is calling looking for Maggie and Harry tells him Macy is convulsing, Jordan tells him he’ll be right there.

Meanwhile, when Mel brings Ray back from Cancun and tells him about the ‘Forty Stone Paradise’ clue Harry gave them, he tells them it could possibly refer to The Iguazu Circle, the Stonehenge of Brazil – a ring of 40 stones thought to have supernatural powers. Maggie sits this trip out. She goes to Spellbound Botanica to get some purification tea. Maggie starts to feel ill again and nearly drops the jar of tea, only for Jordan to catch it. Jordan asks her how long she has been having panic attacks, but Maggie tells him that what she’s going through is magical, not mental.

Later, Maggie has the tea and whilst Mel and Ray are in Brazil, she goes through Ray’s documents and finds Fort Easton mentioned in a lot of them. When Mel and Ray return, they tell her the trip was a bust and Maggie tells them it’s because Harry was delirious and the clue actually refers to the Fort Easton Power Site – a hydroelectric power plant.

Meanwhile, Jordan arrives and finds Harry holding Macy, who has stopped convulsing and seems to be at peace. In her unconsciousness, Dexter helps her into the living room and tells her that someone has come to help, but they have to stay behind a curtain. Marisol introduces herself and Macy tries to tear the curtain apart but both Marisol and Dexter stop her, as they have to stay apart due to the necromancer’s rules, however Marisol does manage to hold Macy’s hand. Marisol explains to her that she needs to control her emotions to control her powers. Harry comes to pick up Marisol, but not before meeting Macy and helping her forget the trauma of the incident. Macy stops breathing and Jordan has to perform CPR.

Meanwhile, Ray, Mel and Maggie need to figure out how to get past the guards at the power plant. When Maggie finds out more about the way Mel and Ray have been bonding, she has another panic attack, and Ray tells her that she used to have them after his and Marisol’s divorce. This revelation angers her as she tells them that their choice to keep secrets from her because of their belief she’s not strong enough to hear the truth is causing problems. She also tells Ray that it hurt that he lied to her about being his biological father, and her increasing anger causes her powers to expand, with energy coming out of her hands and taking out the guards.

Whilst Jordan is giving Macy CPR, he notices a fresh cut behind Harry’s ear. He concludes that the Faction must have put something in his head to prevent any spells from restoring his memory, and tells him that they need to get it out to save Macy. When Jordan gets a chip out of Harry’s head, his memories come back and he heals Macy.

Meanwhile a power plant employee catches Mel, Maggie and Ray snooping around, but they manage to convince him they’re at the plant for a demo. Mel, Maggie and Ray are shown several magical creatures in pressurised pods floating in the water. When the facility goes into lockdown and Julian comes in with armed guards, Maggie throws the marble and she, Mel and Ray walk through the portal, exposing magic to everyone there.

The sisters tell each other everything they learnt and agree they need to take Julian and the Faction down. Ray talks to Maggie, apologising for keeping secrets from her and tells her that he always has and will love her as his own daughter. Macy goes to the backyard to see Harry, they dance and finally kiss.

Overall I felt that this was a solid penultimate episode with the Faction story arc progressing – it will be interesting to see how the finale deals with the reveal of Julian leading the Faction and the expanded experiment on transferring magic with the use of the hydroelectric power plant. I also appreciated that Harry and Macy finally gave into their feelings for each other and kissed. I also enjoyed seeing Jordan and Ray helping the sisters out again.

Stray Observations:

-Rupert Evans (Harry) directed this episode.
