Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 17 (Search Party)

This episode has a lot of reveals and deals with feelings.

The episode kicks off with Macy practising her breakup speech to Julian on Mel and Maggie. When Macy leaves to go and breakup with Julian, Maggie gets a phone call from Jordan who asks her to come and get him from Idaho.

When Macy goes to breakup with Julian, he reminds her that he has a charity event that evening and due him being distracted in order to prepare for it, she is unable to go through with the breakup. Meanwhile, Ray’s friend, Choochi, tracked Nadia’s license plate to Julian’s company. Maggie calls Macy to inform her of this and that the Faction has Harry.

When Macy goes back to the Command Centre, angry at herself for not knowing about Julian, Mel points out that while the car is registered to his company, they don’t know how much he is in involved in the Faction, if he is at all. Maggie has a premonition of a sub-basement lab in Julian’s building and someone entering in a code to access it. Macy says that they need to go to the charity event to get into the lab.

While Mel is making a ‘care package’ of potions for them to use at the event, she realises that she is missing ingredients and needs Abigael’s help. When Abigael arrives, she brings her luggage with her and says she needs a place to crash as Godric and various demons have taken over her apartment.

When Jordan points out that there would be bag checks at the event, Abigael shows them two purses and when she throws a potion bottle in one, it comes out of the other one. Macy tells them all that Mel and Abigael will stay behind to make the voice mimicking potion, whilst she, Maggie and Jordan go to the event. Jordan gets the blueprints of Julian’s building from city hall and tells them there is a sub-basement unaccounted for in the plans, which makes Maggie realise that it is the sub-basement from her premonition. The voice mimicking potion requires a kiss to seal the deal, so Macy manages to kiss Julian so she can mimic his voice to access the voice-activated elevator to get to the sub-basement.

Macy barely manages to escape detection downstairs, only to be caught by Julian when she returns. Macy faints and makes an excuse about suffering from migraines to try to explain herself. Julian explains to her that his sister, Rosemary, was in the car accident that killed his parents. She was ejected upon impact and saw a whitelighter appear, heal the two women in the other car, and disappear with them, leaving Rosemary to die. Meanwhile after Jordan and Maggie strike up a conversation with Vivienne, Maggie discovers that Vivienne is the person who opened the lab via code.

Meanwhile, Mel goes through Abigael’s suitcases to find the magic detector, but Abigael tells her it’s still at her apartment. Whilst they sneak in to find it, Mel asks Abigael why she’s being loyal to her demon side considering her father tried to kill her and her family rejected her. Abigael reveals that her mother rejected her too, hating the demon parts of and forcing witchcraft on her.

Macy tells Maggie and Jordan about Julian’s accident and Rosemary. Then they come up with the idea of mimicking Vivienne’s voice as Julian is busy with his speech. Macy comes up with the idea of using Vivienne’s saliva with the potion instead of having Jordan kiss her. Jordan drinks out of Vivienne’s wine glass and it works. The three of them go downstairs to the sub-basement to find the lab with the magic detector. Maggie remembers the code and Macy enters it. They find a variety of magical creatures frozen in pressurised pods, Maggie eventually finds Harry, and in her attempts to free him, Macy accidentally starts the transfer of magic from the other creatures to a test subject, which results in the creatures dying in the process. Just as the transfer from Harry gets underway, Macy uses her powers to send his pod through the portal to the Command Centre, moments before Vivienne, her investor, and her staff burst through the door. Macy frees an alive Harry out of the pod.

The episode ends with Macy declaring her feelings for Harry when he wakes up, only for her to discover that he doesn’t remember her.

Overall I felt that this was a solid episode as the sisters discover Vivienne’s involvement in the Faction, Macy has finally declared her feelings for Harry, and we get an insight into Abigael’s life and why she chose to embrace her demon side over her witch side. I also enjoyed seeing Jordan work with the sisters, especially as he worked with Harry in the previous episode, especially seeing him help Maggie trigger a premonition and enjoy watching the potion making process.

It will be interesting to see where we go from here with Harry’s amnesia and Vivienne discovering that her lab has been broken into, although she didn’t seem too cut up about it.

Best one liners and interactions:

  • “I mean, do we not have a breakup spell so I can avoid all of this?” “There is, it’s called ghosting.” (Macy-Mel)
  • “We’re gonna need some tequila.” “Industrial strength.” (Mel-Maggie on Macy’s impending breakup with Julian)
  • “Walk up to a total stranger and kiss her? Even white dudes can’t do that anymore.” (Jordan to Maggie on her suggestion to him to kiss Vivienne so he can magically mimic her voice)
