Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 15 (Third Time’s the Charm)
This episode finally has the sisters reclaiming the Power of Three.
The episode kicks off with the sisters getting their morning drinks and discussing getting the Power of Three back, whilst Harry tries and fails to make a duplicate talisman. The sisters then get an alert to a witch in distress in Portland.
When they arrive, Maggie sees Bruce get out of the car and they ambush him. Bruce unleashes the smoke monster on them, seen in the previous episode. Maggie uses her baton to break Bruce’s magical watch, which he used to open the door, and the monster ends up killing Bruce before the sisters can get the answers they need. When they hear noises coming from the trunk of the car, they open it and find the witch blindfolded inside. When they hear more cars coming in the distance, Macy picks up Bruce’s damaged watch, Maggie blindfolds the witch, and they go back to the Command Centre. When they get back to the Command Centre, the Guardian welcomes Elder Celeste, revealing that Celeste was the Elder who created whitelighters.
Celeste reveals to the sisters and Harry that she walked away from being an Elder a long time ago, although she does help the sisters out by putting the map in demon spotting mode. When Harry feels a sense of familiarity with Celeste, he realises that she was the Elder present when his darklighter was extracted from him and leaves the Command Centre enraged, not wanting to work with her. It’s revealed that Celeste created whitelighters after the Salem witch trials to protect witches.
Celeste tells her that humans are the biggest magical threat and that they need the Power of Three to deal with it. However the sisters show reluctance due to the Guardian’s warning in the previous episode. Celeste then casts a spell on them that puts them in a dream state.
In Macy’s dream, Harry and Abigael are married with children and living in the Manor with Maggie and Mel, who Macy is estranged from as she apparently left and married Julian. Abigael ended up replacing Macy in the Power of Three. When Macy tells Abigael that no matter what the reality, she’ll always be the devil, Abigael’s true colours re-emerge and they fight, which culminates in Macy accidentally killing Maggie.
In Maggie’s dream she is treated and seen as a child by everyone around her, which leads to Mel being killed by the smoke monster, whom no-one can see. Maggie feeling like she is treated like a child has been a constant theme throughout the season, and her fear of being hurt by men after being hurt by Ray and Parker is briefly touched on.
Before we see Mel’s dream, we are shown Harry discovering Celeste keeping the sisters in their dream state. Due to his rage, he puts a knife to Celeste’s back and threatens to kill her if she doesn’t explain herself. She explains to him that she has put them under a basic dream casting spell to make them face their fears, but she may have miscalculated as none of them have died in the dream and woken up, commenting that the sisters are too connected to each other. Harry tells her that their greatest fear isn’t dying, it’s losing each other and convinces her to cast the spell on him so he can enter their dreams.
In Mel’s dream, she’s in a mental asylum (I thought the Tulipe Institute but from what I could tell, this wasn’t established). Harry is tied up in a room and is about to be tortured, he calls out to Mel and she can hear him. Whilst she is running down the hallway, Jordan comes up to her and tells her that Macy and Maggie are waiting for her outside, but this turns out to be a trap – they are tied to stakes and Jordan is the Witchfinder General. Before he can burn them at the stakes, Harry manages to escape from the room and subdues Jordan with a taser. When Harry, Mel and Maggie sacrifice themselves to save Macy, they all wake up.
The sisters go back to Portland after getting another alert of a witch in distress. They hear a scream in the distance, but they find the witch dead. While they briefly contemplate leaving again, they decide that they do need to make sacrifices and face their fears, and they manage to reclaim the Power of Three, and use it to vanquish the smoke monster.
The episode ends with Harry forgiving Celeste for her part in the creation of his darklighter, and she also tells the sisters that she wasn’t trying to force the Power of Three on them, rather have them face their fears so they can face the big threat that the human Faction is posing. Harry orbs her to Mykonos so she can go into hiding.
Overall I felt that this was a solid episode – instead of having the group split up into their own A, B or C stories, which has been the case for the majority of the episodes in this season, this episode instead had one main story. I personally ended up liking the unexpected introduction of Celeste, as well as Celeste herself – her casually mentioning her seemingly love-hate dynamic with Da Vinci was hilarious but she also provided another side/perspective to the darklighter story arc. Although her appearance does present a plot hole in the Elders massacre story arc in the previous season, although this could be easily explained away by her choice to walk away from being an Elder.
We only have four episodes left of this season and now that humans trying to extract and use magic has been acknowledged as the big threat of the season, it will be interesting to see where we go from here.
Stray Observations:
-Celeste created her magical watch with Leonardo Da Vinci, which stops her from aging. It will also kill her via turning her into dust if stops or breaks.
-Da Vinci provided Celeste with a cover during the Spanish Inquisition and took credit for her work.
-In Macy’s dream, Abigael wears the same red dress that Macy wore when she was held captive by the darklighter, which is a dress that Harry likes, implying that Abigael is trying to be like Macy.
