Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 14 (Sudden Death)

This episode provides a possible resolution to the darklighter story arc and an unexpected twist.

The episode kicks off with Harry injecting the green substance/darklighter poison via an IV and connecting with the darklighter via a mind space. Harry asks the darklighter where he is, the darklighter shows him a few clues and asks for his help. Meanwhile the sisters are in the backyard and cast a spell to try and restore the Power of Three. While the magic connection they initially tried to summon a few episodes ago fizzled out at Macy, now the connection reaches all three of them but still fizzles out.

Harry tells the sisters that his darklighter is in danger, which means he is in danger. Mel proposes retracing the darklighter’s steps, and she and Harry leave. Meanwhile, Macy starts conducting experiments on hair samples she collected from both Helens to find a way to sever the connection between Harry and his darklighter, and Maggie takes Jordan with her to see Abigael.

Harry and Mel’s first stop is back at the factory where the magical creatures were kept, which was discovered in Deconstructing Harry. This time, they find the factory empty, with Harry stating that the darklighter and creatures must have gone underground. Just in case anything happens to him, Harry tells Mel a few heartfelt observations about her, Maggie and Macy – he tells Mel that she needs to forgive herself for her mistakes and that she is a born leader but is too hard on herself. He then asks Mel to tell Maggie to trust her powers, she has more than she thinks and knows, but he doesn’t get the chance to reveal what he wants Macy to know, as Mel cuts him off to reassure him nothing will happen to him.

Meanwhile, Macy opposes Maggie going to see Abigael, but Maggie points out that they have no other ideas to go with. Maggie is going to see Abigael as she believes that she did something to Macy when she stripped her of her demon powers, and she wants to find the ritual dagger to find out what that would be. Macy asks her whether she’s doing this to see Parker and reminds her that they need to keep Parker being alive a secret to maintain the truce between demons and witches, but Maggie denies her assertions.

Back at the factory, Harry and Mel hear an alarm in the distance and find a trashed operating suite, and a vat with the corpse of captured creature. Mel casts the provenance spell on the suite to find out what happened. It’s revealed that a surgical team was experimenting with a magical creature on a human corpse, only for the corpse to turn into a smoke monster and kill them.

Finding a burner mobile phone on the floor, Harry and Mel trace the phone number to another facility in Minnesota and Harry finds the clues the darklighter sent him. They hear screaming from a locked room, however something is stopping Harry from being able to orb in. Mel tries to use her powers to unlock the door and Harry hears the darklighter call out to him. He orbs into another room where he finds the darklighter back in the jar he was originally contained in. When he comes back out into the hallway, Mel gets the door open and the smoke monster comes out and takes the jar from them. Mel manages to drive the smoke monster away and Harry gets the jar back. They find a body further down the hall, the host the group was using to conduct their experiment, which is revealed to be the corpse revived in Dance Like No-One is Witching.

Meanwhile Macy’s experiments in the Command Centre keep failing, so she tries conducting experiments with eggs in SafeSpace. While she’s there, Julian comes to see her and he finds Bell’s inequality theorem on her tablet. Macy tells him about her experiments and asks for his help due to his knowledge on quantum mechanics. Julian offers Macy a consulting job, which would mean that she would work with him. When Macy and Julian share a souffle, he makes an off-the-cuff comment which gives her the idea of emulsion – merging both Harry and the darklighter so they’re one solid being.

Meanwhile Maggie and Jordan go to see Abigael. Maggie claims to get a text from Mel and leaves the room so she can call her, however it was a ruse to get her and Abigael’s minion, Tori, alone. Maggie uses the influencer spell on Tori and asks to be taken to the dungeon, while Jordan talks to Abigael about his curse. While Maggie is looking for the ritual dagger, Parker sees her and wants to talk. Maggie tells him that she’s not interested in talking to him as the demonic part of him will never change. Parker ends up helping Maggie find the ritual dagger, only for Abigael to telekinetically take it away from her, having caught on to Maggie’s plan.

Parker tells Abigael to let them go, and Abigael tells Jordan that Maggie used him to free Parker. However Maggie tells her that she needs the ritual dagger to restore the Power of Three. Abigael tells her that she did nothing to Macy when she stripped her of her demon powers, and that the problem with the Power of Three lies with them, which echoes the Command Centre’s Guardian’s statement in the previous episode. When Maggie comes back to the Command Centre, Macy asks her if she got the answers that she wanted, Maggie tells her she only found more questions. Macy shows and tells Maggie about her emulsion theory.

Harry puts the jar in the attic to protect the darklighter and Macy comes to tell him about her theory, she is not recommending it but doesn’t stop Harry from considering it, as it’s his life. Macy tells Harry that she doesn’t want to lose him, and in turn he tells her that he doesn’t want to lose their friendship.

The episode ends with the reveal that Vivienne is leading the extractions and has the talisman.

Overall I felt that this was a solid episode. The reveal of Vivienne being behind the extractions and having the talisman was a great twist as I didn’t see it coming and now we know who’s behind it all. As Julian’s aunt who only appeared in one previous episode, it would be easy to dismiss her as a one-off character, but now she is revealed to be the Charmed One’s biggest threat. It will be interesting to see how this pans out and affects Julian’s relationship with both her and Macy. On a smaller note, Parker accepting that Maggie has moved on and helping her was true to his character and with that, it will be interesting to see where his character goes from here.
