Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 13 (Breaking the Cycle)

This episode is all about secrets and darkness.

The episode kicks off with Harry getting a telepathic message from his darklighter to go to Foster Island, Maine. Moments later, Maggie wakes up and tells Harry that she had a premonition in her sleep that the darklighter has returned, and he confirms it’s true. Harry goes to Abigael and asks her to go with him to contain the darklighter, and if he can’t be contained, to kill him so the darklighter dies as well. She is outraged at his request, but only agrees after Harry agrees to spend one night alone with her.

When Harry and Abigael arrive at Foster Island, they discover that everyone, but a singular dog is frozen. When they go to a museum, they find an unfrozen young girl, Cassie, a witch who accidentally froze everyone. Cassie tells him that some men tried to kidnap her for an ‘extraction’ but she ended up freezing them, and everyone else in town, to get away. She hid at the museum as her father works there. It’s eventually revealed that the kidnappers are the same witch hunters that tried to abduct Helen in the previous episode. When more of them show up to try and kidnap Cassie again, Abigael kills them using Macy’s fire power.

Harry helps Cassie unfreeze the town, and when he and Abigael return to Abigael’s apartment, she tells him that he’s off the hook in regards to their deal as the darklighter didn’t show up. Abigael also chastises him for essentially using her to deal with his darklighter and dark side, and tells him that he needs to embrace his dark side to deal with the darklighter. The episode ends with Harry inhaling some of the green substance and entering the darklighter’s mind. With prompting from the darklighter, Harry realises that he and the witch hunters were kidnapping magical creatures to take their magic. The darklighter also tells him that the talisman controls his fate and he wants out, he wants to be free.

Meanwhile, the sisters find themselves trapped in the Command Centre with no powers or mobile phone reception, after a lockdown protocol is activated as Maggie is digging for black amber on Macy’s request. When they look in the Book of Elders for a solution, all three of them touch the Book together for the first time and extra pages appear in English. The pages show different names, three sets of names in multiple groups, with the Charmed symbol. Moments later, the Command Centre’s unseen Guardian starts speaking to them, allowing them to ask her five questions.

When Mel exceeds the question limit by asking the Guardian if there have been other Charmed Ones, security measures are activated, which involves lasers closing in on them. The Guardian tells the sisters that they have to speak the unspoken. They interpret this as revealing secrets they have kept from each other – Macy tells Maggie that Parker is alive, and Mel tells Maggie that Ray knew she wasn’t his biological daughter. When Maggie admits she feels like a terrible person for feeling relief that Parker is dead, they realise that they have to reveal secrets that they are afraid to admit to themselves – Macy feels like a third wheel and wants to do things on her own, and Mel is sick of always having to be the responsible one and having to be a certain person. The security measures and lockdown are lifted, and a new door opens for them. The door leads them underground to the black amber tree, which also contains the green substance that were in Nadia’s candies and in the darklighter’s darts.

Macy sees a goblet and goes to drink out of it, but the Guardian appears and stops her. The Guardian, a former Charmed One, reveals to the sisters that the Power of Three is too great and one of them will die, which has been the case for their predecessors. Macy ends up drinking from the goblet to restore her telekinesis in hopes that she, Mel and Macy can break the cycle.

Overall I felt that this was a weak episode, but not the weakest. The progression of the darklighter story arc was interesting, as the darklighter had Harry find out about the witch hunters and his desire for freedom. In regards to the reclaiming of the Power of Three, I’m happy that Macy finally got her powers back so the story arc can either move forward or come to a complete close, however I wasn’t a fan of the reveal that there have been previous Charmed Ones. It’s predecessor series had the sisters be prophesised and the only Charmed Ones, I feel that this reveal undermines the show’s premise and came out of nowhere, as there was no previous mention or hint of this being a possibility.

It will be interesting to see where we go from here with the Charmed Ones and darklighter’s reveals.
