Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 11 (Dance Like No-One is Witching)

This episode is all about illness and resurrection.

This episode has the sisters split up again – this time with Mel and Macy working with Abigael to tend to Harry, who is dealing with a demonic illness, and Maggie with Jordan in New Orleans tracking down Ray’s buyers.

The episode begins with a flashback to Julian’s childhood as he reveals to Macy that his parents were killed in a car accident. He also tells her that his aunt Vivienne raised him. Macy tells him that she admires him for becoming the man he is after such a tragedy, and he in turn says he is fortunate to have inspiring women in his life. Macy and Julian sleep together, and the next morning as she is making breakfast for them both, Macy hears footsteps thinking Julian is awake, only to turn around and meet Vivienne. Julian comes into the kitchen and the three of them sit together, and Vivienne reveals she is working on the Airmid, a rapid DNA sequencer.

Meanwhile, Mel and Harry return to the Command Centre from fighting the Malignants. Harry has a gaping wound which Mel attends to, also noticing that he has black spots on his arm. When she asks him about them, he tells her that he noticed them earlier that day, before collapsing and losing consciousness. Mel ends up reluctantly calling Abigael for help and goes to the Command Centre, and then calls Macy.

When Macy arrives at the Command Centre, Abigael tells them she suspects that Harry has been infected with a demonic parasite and she has the antidote for it, however if it’s not the parasite the antidote will kill Harry. Macy decides to take Harry’s blood and look at it under a microscope, as it could be something else. Macy finds that his red blood cells are inflamed and his immune system is responding in a major way. Macy calls Julian so she can use the Airmid to analyse his blood cells further and find out whether he is being attacked by a demonic parasite.

When Macy goes to SafeSpace and meets Vivienne to get the Airmid, Vivienne tells her that she’ll only give her the Airmid if she breaks up with Julian. Macy calls Julian and breaks up with him via voicemail, and Vivienne hands the Airmid over. Meanwhile as Abigael is tending to Harry, he asks her where Macy is. Later when the parasite possesses Harry, he attacks Mel, and while she takes her sweet time to help, Abigael casts a spell on Harry that sedates him. Mel and Abigael take Harry to Abigael’s apartment where she makes the antidote and Macy later shows up with the Airmid. When Macy and Mel get a call for help from Maggie, despite saying she wouldn’t, Abigael uses the antidote on Harry, which does end up working.

Meanwhile Maggie and Jordan go to a meeting at a support group for the occult, as the licence plate that Ray and Mel got a photo of in the previous episode is registered to the support group’s address. At the meeting, Jordan is holding the darklighter chakram, and he and Maggie meet Bruce, who has the same tattoo as Nadia. Bruce invites them to a party, taking their pictures for the bouncer at the door, where he tells them he can meet a genuine collector.

When Maggie and Jordan go to the party, Bruce takes them to meet Nadia. Jordan makes up a story about finding the chakram whilst in the military, when Nadia asks Jordan for a price, Maggie asks Nadia to explain what her ‘group’ does. Bruce offers Maggie and Jordan magical candies; Jordan takes one but Maggie doesn’t.

Later, Nadia has a shaman use the black amber that she got from Ray and the darklighter poison to resurrect someone, with everyone at the party hypnotised by the candies. Maggie manages to break the connection, but not before the shaman steals Jordan’s life force. Mel and Macy perform CPR, which isn’t working, which leads to Macy coming up with the idea of using her fire power and Mel’s freezing power on Maggie’s baton to give Jordan’s heart an electric shock so it will restart. This idea works, saving Jordan.

Towards the end of the episode, Julian is giving a presentation at SafeSpace and sees Macy out the window getting a coffee. Julian walks out to confront her over breaking up with him over voicemail. He asks her if Vivienne put her up to it, she says yes, he tells her to let him handle his aunt, and he kisses her. Harry sees them kiss from a distance, similarly to how Macy saw him and Abigael kissing.

The episode ends with Nadia calling an unknown person to let them know that the resurrection was successful.

Overall I felt that this was a good but not great episode. I’m still not a fan of Macy and Abigael fighting over Harry, I feel it’s a little immature and for a series that claimed to be a feminist version of its predecessor, having two strong female characters fighting over a man is not only cliché but counter-productive to its premise and overall goal. I enjoyed seeing Jordan work with Maggie now that he knows she’s a witch and they make a great team. There are still a lot of unanswered questions revolving around Nadia, who she’s working for, and what her goal is, but the puzzle pieces are slowly coming together.
