Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 9 (Guess Who’s Coming to SafeSpace Seattle)

This episode has Mel and Maggie make a startling discovery, and Macy meet someone new. I’m going to review this episode character by character.

Mel and Maggie – The episode kicks off with Maggie walking down the street listening to music and someone following her. The person attacks her from behind, with Maggie getting a premonition of the person taking her handbag. She gets a baton out, hits them and defends herself, and it’s revealed the person is Jordan, and she is practising her self-defence moves on him.

When Maggie returns home, she finds Mel practising her new power by boiling water, and it’s revealed a few weeks have passed since the events in the previous episode. When Mel hands Maggie a mug to make her tea, she has a premonition as soon as she touches it of someone being killed by the darklighter in a hotel room. When Maggie tells Harry and Macy about it in the Command Centre, Macy decides not to go with them to the hotel as she doesn’t want to get too close to the darklighter. Before they leave, Maggie gets a text message from work and asks Macy to fill in for her while they’re gone.

When they get to the hotel, Harry orbs into the room and finds the door booby trapped, once he disables it, Mel and Maggie go in. When they hear the window open and see someone sneaking in, Mel and Maggie subdue them and it’s revealed that it’s their father, Ray Vera. Ray tells Mel and Maggie that he faked his death as someone is after him, revealing that he has been selling rare artifacts on the black market. When Mel and Maggie go through his bag, they find the darklighter’s chakram. While they are talking to Ray, Harry is outside on the balcony and notices a man in a dark coat coming towards them.

Harry comes in and tells them about the man, who is now right outside the room, and he orbs them back to the Manor. Mel and Maggie are forced to tell Ray that they’re witches. He doesn’t believe them at first, until Mel shows him her new power. Afterwards he admits that it explains a lot about Marisol, and he reveals that after she died, he took some items from her antique collection, coming across a talisman in the size of a small disc with a carving of an eye, and sold them. A year after he sold them, the buyers came back knocking on his door and asking questions. He also reveals that he found the darklighter’s chakram in the Manor’s ashes. Harry, Mel and Maggie conclude that one of the objects he stole left some kind of trace on him. When they go through his bag, they find a Minoan artifact that contains a stone, which ends up uncloaking the Manor.

Harry, Mel and Maggie figure out that the stone is a protection totem and the totem’s guardian, the Fury, is the man in the dark coat, and has been sent to retrieve it. When the Fury tries to kill Maggie, Ray steps in front of her and gives the stone back to the Fury, who disappears.

The episode ends with Mel and Maggie making peace with their father, with Maggie discovering that personal objects, as well as proximity, triggers her premonitions, as the mug that gave her the first premonition was Ray’s favourite one.

Macy – Macy spends the episode filling in for Maggie at SafeSpace Seattle. When she tries to give the tour, a man keeps interrupting her and asking her questions she doesn’t know the answers to, which leads to her lashing out at him. She later finds out that he is Julian Shea, the majority investor of SafeSpace. Macy apologises for lashing out at him, but he tells her that he was pushing her as part of a pressure test.

Julian gives a presentation to the SafeSpace employees where he reveals that he will be excavating under the building, where the Command Centre is, to build a hydroponics garden. Macy makes an influencer potion to get him to change his mind, however before he drinks it, his plans are delayed anyway as he didn’t consult an environmental biologist. Macy ends up forcing him to spill his glass of wine, which has the potion in it, to prevent him from drinking it.

The episode ends with Macy asking Harry if he thinks it’s a good thing that Ray is back, but Harry ends up telling her that due to his selling magical artifacts, he may have been inadvertently responsible for releasing the darklighter.

Jordan – There was only a minor focus on Jordan, with the reveal that Maggie’s presence in Jordan’s life and his fight with Parker in the previous episode, is causing tensions between him and Lola. Later, he Googles Parker and Maggie and finds the social media post paying tribute to Maggie. When he sees Maggie at SafeSpace at the end of the episode, he doesn’t question her about it, however he follows her back to the switchboard room, where he almost sees her disappear into the Command Centre.

Overall I felt that this was a weak episode mainly because it was clearly a filler episode. There was no progression or mention of the Abigael-Overlord subplot, and Julian is obviously being set up as a love interest for Macy to balance out Harry and Abigael’s kiss and attraction. However it was good to get some insight into Ray’s character.
