Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 8 (The Rules of Engagement)
This episode was all about ill-advised romances, and I’m going to review it character by character.
Maggie and Parker – As this episode mostly focused on her, I’ll start with Maggie. The episode kicks off with Maggie still in bed with Parker, rejecting his marriage proposal due to the fact that he is half-demon and she is a good witch, and a marriage between them would never work. She leaves and when she returns to the Command Centre, she finds Harry healing Layla. Layla and some other witches were conducting patrols to protect magical communities and they were ambushed by demons. While she got away, the other witches on her patrol were kidnapped.
When Mel proposes a counter attack, Harry and Macy counter that this will only incite a war and make the situation worse. When Maggie says Parker wants peace, and Mel and Macy dismiss her, she tells them she’s tired of being treated like a child and that she is going to marry Parker. Maggie packs a bag and explains to Mel and Macy that if she marries him she would be representing witches, which could help bring about a truce between demons and witches.
Maggie leaves to go back to Parker’s mansion, where she tells him about Layla and the kidnapped witches. He immediately orders Godric to have the witches released. When Maggie asks him to explain the demon oath he mentioned when he proposed, he tells her that the prophecy states that when the Overlord rises to power, the demons swears an oath to honour and protect him and anyone in the demonic family, as her marrying him would make her family, no demon could attack her or other witches. Maggie tells Parker that she accepts his proposal.
Godric tells Abigael about the wedding and that the demons will turn on each other over it. He asks if they stay the course and kill him. She tells him yes but with one twist, she’ll get Maggie to do it as it will further cement the rift between demons and witches. Godric then tells Parker that the Malignants have planned an attack on a coven near Magic Waters and need his approval to cross through their territory. Parker refuses and when Godric points out that the fact that the Malignants have the right to attack because he hasn’t married Maggie yet, Maggie decides to move the wedding up to that evening. Godric also reveals that the demon oath involves Parker taking blood from Maggie’s palm, which will force her to obey him.
Later Mel tells Maggie that Parker has apples from the Sacred Grove in his office as Godric is the one who killed the Dryads. However Maggie doesn’t believe her as she feels she is not respecting her decisions and tells her to leave. On her way out, she tells her to take a look in his office. Maggie goes to his office, unaware that Godric is watching her, and finds the apples. While she’s in there, Godric tells him that Maggie is stealing the apples, and Parker walks in on her taking them.
When Parker confronts her, he uses her powers to read her mind and finds out about the Command Centre and Jordan. Maggie tells him that he’s a friend but he refuses to believe her. He eats one of the apples, and forces her to marry him and take the oath. At the ceremony, Macy immediately senses something is wrong. Just as Maggie is about to be forced to take the oath, Harry and Macy rescue her with the help of Abigael. When they get back to the Command Centre, Mel shows them the black amber she found, and Maggie has a premonition of Parker killing Jordan.
When they get into SafeSpace, Macy uses her demonic power to set off the fire alarms and evacuate everyone. Maggie tries to get Parker to leave but to no avail, Mel freezes Parker with her advanced powers from the amber and Abigael stabs him from behind. Maggie asks Harry to heal him but as he ate the apple, he is immune to magic and can’t be healed. Parker disappears into thin air as black smoke.
The episode ends with the reveal that Parker didn’t actually die – Abigael has imprisoned him in the cell she was locked in, and having the demons and the sisters believe he is dead is part of her plan to both ensure the trust of the sisters and to motivate the demons further in the war.
Mel – When Mel makes a remark of ‘being a fly on the wall’ at Parker’s mansion this gives her and Harry the idea of literally turning her into a fly on the wall. However the only way she would be able to do this is by cursing herself. Harry and Macy point out the dangers, however Mel says she needs to do this to protect Maggie. Harry tells her that the only way to break the curse is through self-reflection.
Mel turns herself into a fly shortly after arriving at Parker’s mansion for the wedding. She manages to fly into Parker’s office and watches Godric give Parker a briefcase of apples from the Sacred Grove, however she gets to close and is swatted away, landing on the ground.
She eventually flies back up again and self-reflects on her current situation, realising that with the love and support of her sisters, she is no longer powerless, and reverts back to her human form.
After Maggie kicks her out of the wedding, she goes back to the Command Centre, venting by smashing potion vials. In the process of calming herself down and cleaning up, she finds black amber – like the one in Jordan’s ring – inside the Command Centre. She shows it to Maggie and Macy, and Maggie ends up getting her premonition, whereas Mel discovers her freezing power has advanced to molecular manipulation when she defends them from Parker.
Harry, Macy and Abigael – The Harry-Macy-Abigael love triangle kicks off in this episode. When Mel and Macy discuss Harry giving Abigael the benefit of the doubt, Mel tells her about the tracking spell and the sketch they found in her journal. Macy admits the sketch was of the darklighter and not Harry. Mel tells Macy that Harry admitted to have feelings for her and suggests that they could give a relationship a go, but Macy dismisses the idea as being too weird.
While they are at Parker’s mansion, Harry and Macy search for Abigael. When they find the cells, Harry questions why there are no guards around. They find Abigael’s cell unlocked and the guards killed. Abigael later sneaks up behind Harry and tells him that she managed to overpower the guards and escape, after she heard them talk about an assassination attempt by the demons on Parker and Maggie. When Abigael proposes helping Maggie escape, Harry threatens to expose her if she double crosses Maggie.
In the final moments of the episode, Harry thanks Abigael for helping and she kisses him. He is shocked at first but passionately kisses her back, unaware that Macy is watching them.
Overall I felt that this was a solid episode with plenty of twists and turns. It will be interesting to see where we go from here with the reveal that Parker actually didn’t die and Abigael has taken back her Overlord throne. I felt Macy walking in on Harry and Abigael kissing to be cliché, but the camera work on Mel’s perspective as a fly was well done.
