Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 5 (The Truth About Kat and Dogs)

This episode was all about exploring and discovering hidden truths.

The episode kicks off 36 hours after Macy’s disappearance, with Mel and Maggie interrogating a demon to no avail about her whereabouts. Moments after they vanquish him, they find and rescue a witch that was being held by captive him. When they get back to the Command Centre and see that there are no red dots on the map and therefore no witches in distress, they realise that the darklighter is cloaking Macy somehow.

Mel and Maggie decide to use a banned tracking spell to find Macy. The spell requires using something that Macy dreads, is depriving herself of, and desires. While Mel and Maggie agrees on what she dreads and deprives herself of, they argue over what she desires – Maggie believes she desires a normal family whereas Mel believes she desires a successful career.

They eventually cast the spell with the belief that Macy desires a family life, however a dangerous demonic hound is conjured that tries to attack them. Mel and Maggie then cast the spell again, this time with a work pamphlet to symbolise Macy’s desire for a successful career, only for an even more dangerous and aggressive demonic hound to appear and attack them. When Maggie comes up with the idea of finding Macy’s journal to figure out what her desires are, Mel gets a text message from Kat, who is being tortured by someone invisible, with a message from Marisol providing details on where Macy’s diary is hidden. When they find a drawing of Harry in Macy’s journal, they realise that Harry is a person she dreads, deprives herself of, and desires. When they cast the spell for a third time, with Harry as the focus, a timid and sweet dog is conjured, who provides them with the geographical coordinates of Macy’s location in New York.

Meanwhile Abigael, whilst still in containment, suggests to Harry that he’s psychically connected to his darklighter. She suggests that he release her, so she can conduct a demon mind meld on him, so he can access his subconscious and memories of his past. During the mind meld he discovers that he had a second family when he was alive, and he reaches a door he can’t open in which he can hear screaming on the other side. When he eventually opens the door, he finds a hanging paint of Castle Breithe in Scotland. When he and Abigael use the portal to go there, Harry touches an altar and he has a flashback to lying on the altar, where his darklighter essence was forced out of his body and into a bottle, locked with a key. Harry and Abigael see all the other darklighter bottles were destroyed except for Harry’s, which is intact, however his darklighter essence is missing, which makes them realise that someone let it out. When Harry and Abigael go back into Harry’s subconscious for a final time, he eventually catches up to the hooded figure that kept walking by them and it’s revealed to be Macy. This makes Harry realise that as his darklighter is connected to him, he has feelings for Macy as well.

The episode ends with Harry informing Mel and Maggie about his (and subsequently his darklighter’s) feelings for Macy, which means that Macy is not in danger, at least for now.

Overall I felt that this was a good but not great episode. I felt that the Mel and Maggie subplot with the dangerous and demonic hounds was dragged out for far too long, and conversely, I felt that there wasn’t enough time spent on Harry digging deep into his subconscious – if Harry and his darklighter are essentially the same person, I felt that the writers should have spent more time digging deep into his character.

On another note, I appreciated that the writers touched on Kat being mentally tortured due to being used as an anchor to the astral plane, however it would have been better if Mel was aware of it and if the invisible person she had been talking to had been identified.

I also found Macy’s absence (other than briefly appearing as a manifestation in Harry’s subconscious) didn’t hinder the episode, considering her subplot. In fact I felt not having her appear at all increases the stakes of the dangerous situation she is in. It will be interesting to see whether she appears in the next episode.
