Charmed (Reboot) – Season 2, Episode 4 (Deconstructing Harry)
This episode explores the concepts of trust, has Maggie gain a new power, and Harry find out a horrifying secret about the creation of whitelighters.
The episode kicks off with Abigael telling Harry and Macy about the night the assassin kidnapped and attacked her, while under a containment spell that Macy has placed on her. Abigael tells them that she is the Overlord and she was uniting the demons against witches, as she believes they sent the assassin after her. Harry asks her if she saw the assassin’s face and she says no. Abigael also confesses that she killed the two witches in Montana, after she escaped from the assassin.
Abigael also tells Macy that she needs her due to the fact that she has limited powers and her sisters don’t have any powers at all. Harry admits to Macy later that Abigael is not wrong and they do need some allies. Macy asks how he is going with translating the Book of Elders and he tells her it has been a slow process as the Book has been written in multiple ancient languages. He also tells her that they need a safe word so she knows she’s interacting with him and not the assassin, Macy chooses ‘hut 8’.
Meanwhile, Maggie encourages Jordan to pitch the gym to be part of a wellbeing initiative that will enable it to stay open. When she touches him during the conversation she has her first premonition, thinking he is declaring his feelings for her. When she returns to the Command Centre to tell Harry about her new power, he asks her for her opinion on what a letter in the book might be, when she tells him, it leads to him figuring out the letter is part of a Latin word that translate to ‘password’. As soon as he has says ‘password’ aloud, a spider materalises out of the Book and leads Maggie and Harry to a magical wall safe. Inside the safe, they find a magical driver’s licence which is an ID for Harry, a key, and an envelope with the word ‘alpha’ on it. The envelope contains bills for a patient in the Tulipe Institute, a mental institute that used to operate as a torture chamber for witches.
When Macy calls for Mel for help in the Command Centre, Mel tells her that she has re-created as many potions as she could remember from the Book of Shadows. Macy tells her about Abigael and that they’re going to Montana to try and track the assassin. Mel goes with them as she tells Macy that Abigael can’t be trusted. When they get there, Macy puts a bracelet on Abigael that binds her powers and they discover when Abigael runs off that Kayons – blind, werewolf-like demons – are prowling the area. When they eventually catch up with Abigael, she reveals that she is the daughter of Alastor Caine, the major nemesis from the previous season, and Parker’s half-sister. Abigael also shows them a puddle of the assassin’s poison on the ground. Later, they find a trap that the assassin has set, which has captured the Kayon queen.
Meanwhile, Maggie tries to touch Jordan again to get another premonition to no avail. Her premonition eventually plays out, revealing that his comments were actually directed towards his girlfriend, Lola. When Maggie can’t go to the pitch meeting due to dealing with Kayon Queen, Jordan goes to the initiative pitch himself, and is hired.
When Macy, Mel and Abigael return to the Command Centre, Mel decides to take a tracking potion to track the Kayon Queen. The potion has her psychically connect with her and tracks her down to a building where other magical creatures are being held captive by the assassin. Mel frees the creatures, under the influence of the potion, however in the chaos, Macy escapes with Harry, while Mel, Abigael and Maggie escape via the portal.
Meanwhile, Harry goes to the Tulipe Institute. Using the ID and the paperwork in the envelope, he is taken to a patient named Helen. Helen is revealed to be the first whitelighter in existence. When the nurse at the Institute tells Harry that Helen has a sister who is in a much worse condition then she is, he discovers an identical woman to Helen. Helen reveals to him that the other woman is her counterpart, a darklighter.
When Mel and Maggie return home and see Harry going through Helen’s paperwork, Mel asks him where Macy is and he tells her he thought Macy was with them. This leads to the reveal that Macy left with Harry’s darklighter.
Overall I felt that this was a solid episode, with further exploration of who and what Abigael really is, and Maggie gaining a premonition power (much like her original series counterpart). I found it interesting she gained this power, as this series was criticised for not including this magical power. To be in honest, I saw the assassin taking Macy coming, but it will be interesting to see how this subplot plays out.
Stray Observations:
-Maggie’s full name is Margarita Emilia Vera.
