How to Stay Married – Season 3, Episode 6
This episode was all about dreams.
The episode kicks off with Em having a strange sex dream about Gilly in octopus form on a beach, after having spent time with him on the golf course talking about his theory of “octopus people” being written as a book. Later she tells Marlo about the dream, who encourages her to experiment but also tell Greg what she wants. Em tries to get Greg to expand their sexual horizons, only to fail at each attempt, mainly because Greg doesn’t get what she’s trying to achieve. Marlo tells her that she’s not giving Greg a chance to improve and encourages her to tell him about the dream.
After Em tells Greg about her dream, he tries his best to please her (going as far as to wear cricket attire and providing a Bluetooth speaker playing ocean sounds). Just as they finally get in sync and in the act, Sophie comes home from work early and catches them in the act. The episode ends with Em thanking Greg for trying to do everything she asked for, which gets their sex life back on track.
Meanwhile, Ravi had a dream of his own come true by appearing in a commercial. This results in him getting attention from the cool kids, including a girl named Tahlia, who asks Sophie if she and Ravi are still together. Things eventually come to a head between Ravi and Sophie, when he goes to the cinema with the cool kids and acts up, which leads to Sophie pulling the fire alarm to throw them out. They end up arguing in the foyer, with Sophie calling Ravi’s ad stupid, and Ravi calling Sophie out for spying on him and pulling the alarm.
In a smaller subplot, Luna texts Greg asking him for the minutes of the PASH meeting, which leads to him accidentally texting Luna a reply with double kisses and telling her “she’s the best”. This, as well as the way Luna behaves later in the episode, leads Greg to believe that Luna is flirting with him. When Greg confronts her about it later on, Luna dismisses him and tells him she was joking.
The episode ends with Terry and Marlo pretending to be Greg and Em as part of their “vanilla role play” only to decide that they aren’t so vanilla anymore due to the extent of Em’s sex dream.
Overall I felt that this was another weak episode. While I did appreciate another exploration into a relatable marital issue and I felt that it was generally well executed, I felt that the Sophie-Ravi and Greg-Luna subplots weakened the episode, as the Sophie-Ravi subplot wasn’t resolved and the Greg-Luna subplot didn’t really add anything to the episode and was a little inconsistent in its execution, specifically Luna’s behaviour. I also enjoyed the reveal of Terry and Marlo’s vanilla role play, as well as the scene involving Em revealing the details of her sex dream to Greg and Marlo, especially with Chloe’s smoothie making preventing explicit details from being revealed to the audience, a callback to classic film transition techniques that would allude to sex.
Stray Observations:
-Apparently Terry and Marlo use what they think Greg and Em’s sex life is like as “vanilla role play” in their own sex life.
-Apparently Greg and Em once had phone sex over a payphone call.
-Greg’s pet name for Em when she sleeps is “Drooling Beauty”.
-Brad didn’t appear in this episode.
-Apparently Luna is part of an adult choir.
-Ravi and Sophie are known by the couple name “Ravophie” by their school peers.
-Apparently Greg and Marlo have had similar dreams about Gilly and Sachin Tendulkar respectively, involving a hang glider.
Best one liners and interactions:
- “Try not to cast a romantic spell on the mums on the way out! Alakazam!” (Luna to Greg)
- “Em, my sexpert senses are tingling!” (Marlo to Em)
- “I want you to have the best dream tonight and I think Moby Dick agrees.” (Greg to Em)
- “Did you talk to her?” “In many ways, yes, verbally no.” (Em-Greg on Greg talking to Sophie after she caught them in the act)
- “We’ll have to find another vanilla couple.” “I’ll do a lap of Ikea in the morning.” (Terry-Marlo on Greg and Em as a vanilla couple)
